Can someone say what this thread is started from? What happened to a tennis player recently?

Osaka is not having any more stressful of a life than Andy Roddick, Agassi, Roger, Graff, Serena, or Samprass had

I would say social media is much more detrimental now than anything those others faced.

But it’s self inflicted. Nobody makes them get on or read the comments. I know that i'm an idiot. I know that the world is full of idiots. I purposely limit my social mediaing so as to not interact with idiots who are more idiotic than myself.

Osaka also has all the benefits of 21st century training and technology so i'm not really going to give her the benefit of the doubt.

ETA: Monica Seles was stabbed on court. That trumps any mean words that Osaka will ever have to endure.

The Pressure on these kids is insane from early on. I’ve seen insane parents over the years when I played tennis. Spend hundreds of thousands on lessons and the kid isn’t even having fun at that point. Feel sorry for them.

Seles was starting to have mental issues before the stabbing. Mardi Fish had to quit due to mental issues. Jana Novotna was a basket case, Agassi was screwed up etc etc

There was a lot of mental issues in tennis before as well, you just didn’t hear about it like you do today

oh i have no doubt about it. i listed in my post that i know plenty of people that it had great effect on in my personal life.

i'm just saying that today's athlete isn't handling it well and views negative comments on a completely optional social media account that they could not post to or ignore the comments of is not in the same stratosphere of getting stabbed on court.

now if we want to talk about the role the media has on that, it's another conversation.

I absolutely can't stand Osaka in any sense of the word (she is obviously an amazing tennis talent,) but if i was her and i went back and listened to the way the two announcer harpies talked about her the second that she started wavering to Fernandez, i'd never want to take questions again. i'd want to slap the two.

while. He won Texas UIL 3 years in a row after that. Then dropped tennis forever and never played again as far as i know. A girl in my grade was really good and made it to state every year. Got 2nd her Sr. year and never played again.

Please stop acting like this only happens in tennis, literally happens in every sport.

Again, give me a break on tennis just being in a league of its own. Give me a break on USTA events literally every weekend. They aren’t.

Again it’s all about pushing too far, too hard. Life is a balance. Take some time off and be top 15 until you get the drive to be top 3 again. That’s not the worst thing. Being top 3 in anything takes immense commitment.
