I think there is just better science and training that gives more people that ability. In the old days it was kind of a “you either could or you couldn’t” kind of thing.

I know this will cause the clutching of pearls across the entire website but a big part of it is the last 25 years or so you have more and more kids specializing early on and even specializing to just pitch. If you all you are doing is focusing on how to be the best pitcher you can be by the time you are 13 onward, not even wasting time with bp, you are going to be better at it. And yes for 99% of travel ball parents it’s a complete money sink but for that 1% that actually do make it you see a difference in the level of ball being played. And yes, the internationals have also shifted over that same time to where now you are no longer finding a Dominican playing stick ball, these guys are being picked to go to baseball academies in the Caribbean from their pre teen years.

Yup, batters have improved too but it's hard to compete with the endless onslaught of Randy Johnson Jr's.

What sucks is that it both makes games less entertaining and makes pitchers much more fragile/disposable, as the human body can't handle the forces required to pitch that way.

But you play to win the game

Because they’re only facing one type of hitter.

MLB batting averages

aren't valued anymore. it's about launch angles and exit velocity.

if you go 1/4 with a HR and 2 RBI, that's valued over 2/4 with 2 singles

This is why Judge should be considered one of the GOAT hitters. Only seven batters batted over .300, and Judge was at .331, with a million walks and 53 DONGS. He batted .364 in the WC round. Compared to his peers, the Captain is in a class of his own

he is

raleigh had a much better seasons though. also better in clutch situations, where judge has struggled this year and in the playoffs historically.

Everybody trains to throw harder for less pitches. Teams use more pitchers, now. It’s smart.

I agree. It's also boring.

I wouldn't go that far, by WRC+ Judge was a massive 43% better than Raleigh. 43% better than a guy that hit 60hrs, just let that sink in.

Raleigh had better defense and imo a better story. 60hrs is insane and from a catcher is even more wild. But even with pitch framing included, Judge put up better overall value

Pitching has evolved , hitting hasn't or cant after a certain plateau. The difficulty levels are completely different. Pitching has many variables that can be controlled to evolve, hitting doesn't.

This has been a fascinating thread for me. I don’t follow MLB that much anymore and my attitudes on baseball are still stuck in the 80s and 90s.
