Walker is a well funded 5A School as a part of the Livingston Parish Public School System. They also passed a millage within the city limits of Walker that generated the funds for a $25 million dollar expansion of an already 5A High School. There is a pizza shop, bakery, credit union and Nike apparel store at the School already. The expansion will increase student amenities.

On the Athletics side, they put in a field turf surface made out of coconut-based material that is allegedly nicer than the Saints playing field. They just redid the track, concessions and area surrounding the Field and believe it or not, they have have a Jumbotron replay board.

They can afford to spend money on facilities and the program.

Add to this that Wade Smith just retired from U-High a few weeks before this announcement (ironically he was my principal at Denham Junior High just over 25 years ago), and rumors that McKernan pulled up stakes from sponsorship of the program and it’s not all that far fetched.

As a lifelong LP resident, I’m not sure the Parish has ever had this level of coaching talent in Football at one time. Say what you like about Conides, but Beard and now Mahaffey are big fish in our Parish’s relatively little pond.

Yep! A lot more than you'd think in LP. Walker will be Zachary High in 2-3 years. Book it

I'm very interested in seeing who Uhigh brings in now. I would think Martin would be next in line, but who knows with this new administration

What the shite is this. It’s just because the suburbs of BR are starting to get good at football with people fleeing BR and moving out there so it makes sense. Try and be one of the first successful 5A suburb BR teams and try and build a program. Zachary did it and now teams like St Amant, EA, Walker, and Live Oak are trying to build. I don’t know what the issue with Denham Springs is to be honest and why they aren’t more successful
It's way more than that my man... prior to Z and Catholic winning.. BR hadn't won a title in the highest classification since tara in 1974..... 10 years post katrina BR replaced NOLA as the football epicenter of LA...

don't understand high profile high school coaches going to public schools, where the supplemental pay is set at $3250 in Livingston parish across the board no matter what school you're at. That's $3250 A YEAR

Booster clubs can and will supplement pay. Another coach is that area is getting tons of extra benefits outside of his actual salary.

that's what a U High parent told me yesterday. New admin told Mahaffey the party is over with the recruiting and scholarships. Look for some of their other coaches to move on as well.

Yeah but a lot of people are moving out to the Ascension, Livingston, and the Zachary areas because of all the job opportunities in the BR area in the industry and construction fields. No one wants to live in BR so they move to the outskirts of the city. I expect the AP, LP, and Zachary areas to be one of the best areas in the state for athletics over the next 10 years

Add to it the fact that what isn’t being reported is the man isn’t going to have to teach a class at all and won’t have to report until 2:00 in the afternoon, while getting paid a “teachers” salary as the bulk of his pay. Uncharted teritories which is going to be interesting when that news gets out and other teachers and coaches find out.

I could see Mistretta, lil Weiner or Troxclair (just took the Lee job) trying to go for it.

Mckernan’s son is graduating, I guess Gordon got it done.

Sour Grapes...I wonder if its because you're a DSHS or LOHS Fan? Or perhaps you're just a teacher? But I can assure you this...He is far from the only coach who enjoys this type of setup. You also cannot put a pricetag on the exposure Mahaffey's program generated for U-High.

They had their own Reality TV series on Cox Cable during their most recent season. Seriously. Think about that. The math teachers may be great, and I know the band program at Walker is huge...but that ain't what's gonna generate revenue outside of dedicated funding sources which are scarce in Louisiana for Public Schools.

Getting the community invested in a school via its Athletics absolutely will. Go look at what the U of Alabama has done since 2008. Ridiculous stuff. All fueled by the sustained success of their Football and Athletic Programs.

It can work in a community as well. Walker is living proof as they passed a millage to put their $ where their mouth is.

Dunham already paid weiner a lot to leave Zachary and are letting him recruit so he probably won't bother to move to u high that's in transition with admin, boosters, graduated recruits, etc.

Walker has the nicest turf I have ever walked on. It is a noticeable difference. Sulphur has something very similar

Agreed. It's amazing. After it was first installed Dru over at DSHS was beyond PO'd from what I understand.

.

I have also heard this. Word on the street is that U-High is having some major issues right now. The U-Foundation is apparently being audited and finding some misappropriation of funds having to do with athletics. The head of school Wade Sims retired in January. Frank Rusciano, the high school principal has been put on leave. Now Mahaffey is leaving. Don't be surprised if you see the basketball coach leave as well.

How bad were the kids they were taking in for sports? I guess what I'm getting at is how obvious was it? U High is a tough school to get in to so if a D student from the north side of town that happens to be a beast RB suddenly gets in, it would be pretty obvious what's going on. Did they even try to hide it? I'm just curious about how stuff like that goes on in such a political environment like U High.
It was bad. And no, they didn't try to hide it. Many of the athletes that transferred into Uhigh were placed into a program called resources. The athletes would get special help on their homework and would even take test separate from the rest of the typical students. Other schools have similar programs, but they are reserved for kids with learning disorders. Now I'm not saying some of the athletes didn't have learning disorders, but when a significant portion of the athletes are in resources something is up.
