I dont understand why they are so hellbent on wanting to be called the "University of Louisiana" they should have never changed from SLU and ULM should have never changed from NLU. But thats my get off my lawn comment for the day.

I just wish some LSU Alumni with balls would get elected to the state legislature to shut this shite down once and for all.

There's rules here and UL-L is breaking them. There is no single "University Of Louisiana" and they need to put a stop to this bullshite before it becomes too commonplace to stop it.

I just do not understand why anyone anywhere cares what ULL’s athletic department calls themselves on ESPN broadcasts.

Seriously, who fricking cares?

Just curious when they changed to the Ragin Cajuns. Anyone recall?

The name was changed to Ragin Cajuns from the Bulldogs in 1962, initiated by Russ Faulkinberry because his team was 95% from the Acadiana region. But since they didn't have a particular mascot at the time, the Bulldog stayed around for quite a while, I think until 1974 or so. I also think part of it was to not use the same mascot as La Tech whose mascot, I think, predated USL or probably SLI's use of the mascot.

That's what I know about it

Here is the problem with that logic. If they would do that and force the legal hand of the state then it would affect LSU.

Louisiana State University A&M @ BR would be a damn mouthful. So LSU has branded themselves as LSU, wisely so.

IIRC LSU was never told they had to use the full name in all official usage by the state whereas both ULM and ULL were. If I'm not mistaken there are even guidelines as to how the Lafayette/Monroe part of the name must take up a certain portion of any branding. ULL's whole premise on their use of UL is 'the athletic department is separate from the institution'. Separate until they needed $24.5MM from the University to cover the athletic departments $41.4MM budget.

They need to bring back that Pepper Mascot!!!! Didn’t he scare children or something? It was like an evil fruit of the loom character. (Yes I’m a kid of the 80’s)

Thought they used to be the Indians, but they were the bulldogs initially before changing to the Ragin Cajuns

They did go from SLI to USL to ULL to UL though

When being cajun became popular. Before that, most from the city of Lafayette looked down their nose at real country cajun people.

Agreed. This is a pressing issue for the state to consider and remedy. I hope you write to your representative.

You think that logic would hold up in court? Because I can tell you it wouldn’t. If that were the case then in 1984 when then USL legally changed its name to the University of Louisiana would’ve stuck. But because the law never stated they could, then that meant they couldn’t and it was reversed.

You think being cajun was popular in 1973 ? Why do LSU fans concern themselves with University of Louisiana ? Insecure ?

You should go protest at the Capitol. Legislative Session will soon be underway.

Can you not afford a bullhorn?

Yeah let's focus on the important issues like how a school not called LSU brands itself compared to the state losing jobs, population, and tax base yearly. Because that's what's so important in times like these.

Tell you what. Go to the state capitol and present your case, and let us know how it goes.

I don't disagree. I just think the "It's separate from the University" argument doesn't hold water when 60% of the budget is direct institutional support.

I think most would have a lot more respect for the name change if the fans and supporters were up front instead of making weak arguments and trying to redirect when called out on them. "Yes, we aren't supposed to, but we will until they force us not to." It's what is happening. At least be honest about it.
