This is false. Go take a look at the gates to the campus on Johnston Street. When they were first built (a nice addition btw) they added letting to it with THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA on it with Lafayette underneath. Within a month, students had pulled or kicked off the lettering for Lafayette and what remained was holes. Now...this was years ago. Has the university replaced the Lafayette? As of a few days ago, the answer would be no. This isn't on the gates of some sports complex...it's on the front door of campus. It's bad enough to allow vandals to deface the name of the university, but to then LEAVE IT like that because the university clearly feels it's better served by having the lettering removed is the sad part.
And let's not even talk about the hilarity that is the large red sign in front of Blackam on Johnston that does include Lafayette but tries so desperately to hide it in the tiniest of italicized fonts. Unless you knew to look for it, you'd never see it.
I've had this conversation with Joey Durel when the name first came through some 15 years ago and he was clear that this was NOT just some sports deal, but that it was an incremental way to get the name changed. As an alumnus of USL, I find that ridiculous, but whatever. But those of you suggesting that there is some wall of separation between how the university proper wants to be called and the athletics teams want to be called are either uninformed or lying.

I agree. As a LSU graduate I don't like USL calling itself UL-Lafayette or using the moniker Louisiana in any way shape or form implying that they are the University of Louisiana.

Maybe he's confused by what he reads every time he enters campus from Johnston Street?
My favorite part is the holes left behind after vandals removed the unwanted Lafayette, and the fact that the university has deemed it appropriate to leave it defaced for years now.
But yeah...it's just the sports teams.

jesus, we could sit here asking all day why schools go by a particular name and not another one. preference of the school to work within their legal boundry to brand themselves.

What I don't understand is that everyone gets all bent out of shape about ULL saying Louisiana, but nobody says anything about ULM doing the same thing.
ULM has a billboard outside the Superdome saying University of Louisiana. You have to look really close to figure out which one it is.
