I couldn't believe they thought a 9:20ET tipoff was a good idea.
This isn't a new thing, either. I remember all the way back to UConn's 2011 title game against Butler; I was on the east coast for work watching the game with a UConn grad and was disgusted it was 10:30 with an entire half to go.
I'm sure the TV execs know what they are doing, but it is annoying. The CFP champ game is always on a Monday as well.
The matchup wasn't intriguing to casuals. SDSU doesn't have a name, they don't play an exciting game, and UCONN, from the tip, was clearly head and shoulders better.

Monday night at 9:20pm will do that.
It needs to be on a Saturday.
So then you'll have two final four games being played on Thursday night which guarantees the same problem. You'll have one game starting too early and one starting too late.

It’s ridiculous.
Meanwhile, ESPN execs seeing the women’s numbers creeping closer to the men’s:

Yeah, I was thinking about watching the game until I saw the start time. I wake up at 5 AM for work every morning so I'm usually in bed getting ready to go to sleep by 9:15 PM.

It was actually 16.9 million, but who is counting.

Fri and Saturday typically carry the lowest ratings, with sun-thur being ideal for maximizing viewership.
The sat/mon split for final 4 and title makes the most sense. For the title game, Sunday could potentially bring more viewers than a Monday night, but there's also probably more content competition on sunday (compared to Monday). So, that's a wash.
If the title was moved to Sunday, that means the final 4 is a Friday, which would be a ratings disaster.
The problem with this game was the matchup, pure and simple.
I do agree the start time is too late, but it's been that way for a while, and wasn't unique to this game.

The tip has been 9:20 eastern since at least Michigan State v. Indiana State (Bird v. Magic) and still remains the most watched NCAA championship game ever. Indiana State was not a basketball brand name at all and this was MSU's second only trip to the Final Four and first national championship. MSU and Indiana State were not marque basketball programs at the time.
What the game had was two superstars who had been getting hype all year and things just worked out that the two best players were facing each other in the finals.
Can anyone name who were the best players on SDSU and UConn?
Another thing to remember that back then stores, businesses, schools, and offices did not open as early. Many people with office jobs or white-collar jobs didn't have to be at work as early. Stores often didn't open until 9 am and many offices and banks did not open until 9:00am. Your average white collar dude could wake up at 7:30am and be at the office at 9:00am.

Or more plausibly, the game just has gotten longer and the network hasn’t adjusted

It’s been at that time for 25 years at least

They seriously need to move the natty off of Monday.
For real, the whole tournament does splits between Thursday/Saturday and Friday/Sunday. But then the final 4 goes Saturday/Monday?
Why not have the final 4 Friday night and the championship game Sunday afternoon?

I watched maybe an actual minute of the game early on and said frick it, I don’t care
Went to bed and woke up to pee later on and checked the score.

yep, its absolutely idiotic that the game starts this late. It was stupid 35 years ago, and its stupid now. There is no defending it.

Watch for the officials to protect the blue bloods next year because of this.

Saturday is perfect for four fan bases coming in and the party. I don't want that to change. But, they should move the final up 45 minutes to an hour. I went to bed at half on Monday.

Monday night sucks. These championship games need to be on the weekend when people don't have to work the next day.

It’s been that way for 35 years. Ratings aren’t down because of tip time.

Everyone wants to see upsets and Cinderellas, until you get a title matchup like this one.
Meh, many on this board believe UConn is a blue blood, and SDSU has a big enrollment and has been a solid program for years now, even getting 2 and 4 seeds under Fisher.
There just weren't many dominant teams or sure bets in college basketball this season. The #1 seeds were Alabama, Purdue, Houston, and Kansas. Only one of those is a blue blood, and all seemed beatable.
According to ESPN, they only had 22 perfect brackets left early on St. Patrick's Day, and they all busted by the time FDU won. The lack of monetary interest likely tuned out more folks on Monday than the teams themselves.

This was objectively the absolute worst title game matchup (from a general fan interest perspective) that I can remember in 30 years of watching the ncaa tournament. There is zero way to spin this as a favorable matchup for viewership.
