The kids themselves are only a small part of the problem.
Crappy coaches who favor their kid and his friends.
Burnt-out coaches who get tired of dealing with parents who think their kid is the next phenom.
Too many sporting options available, spreading the pool of available players across multiple sports
Youth sports that focus on simply winning rather than teaching fundamentals and love of the game.
Travel leagues that are driving local rec leagues (where kids can play a sport with their neighborhood buddies) into oblivion, especially since COVID. This is particularly true in baseball.

I agree with pretty much all of this.
I don’t think travel ball should be a thing before high school age.

I’ve been hearing about soccer “taking over” for the past 50 years.
Soccer in the USA is dominated by travel clubs which are expensive and exclude a lot of kids.
The best athletes focus on the big three: football, baseball and basketball. The financial opportunities for those sports far exceed soccer, attracting our best athletes.
High School football is not affected by a relatively small number of schools that can’t field teams.

Coincidentally (or not?) Oberlin College is arguably, literally, the worst NCAA program at any level (FBS through D-III). Bill Connelly's SP+ says Ohio State would be like a 159.5-point favorite on a neutral field over Oberlin College.

Correct, 1921.
Not sure if this is why, but Ohio recently passed a law allowing kids to participate in the closest school district if their team doesn't have the sport. So they may actually be doing these kids a favor and saving money in the process.

I’m watching a soccer practice right now. It started at 5 and so far they’ve had two water breaks for five minutes each after jogging about 50 yards and later skipping for some reason.

where do you propose kids play? you propose rec? so 12 games and 10 practices is enough....yea kids that want to play HS baseball are never going to go for that. not to mention the amount of 13/14u leagues in most states is less than 10 across a whole state.
for football too, there needs to be flag 7v7 options all the way until 7th grade so kids can play, then move to middle school
but one of the biggest problems is coaches thinking its the damn navy seals, not understanding how to make the game actually fun or they just want to see kids hit each other for their own amusement. Why? because its all about their ego. so kids quit.

This is one of the bigger issues. Dads out there coaching 9 year olds as if they were high school kids, and completely forgetting how much they hated how they were treated by their own coaches but then go out and do the same thing to a bunch of kids. They make practice miserable for the kids and wonder why so many quit after a year or two.
Idiot coaches having a team full of 9-10 year olds and some of them not playing a single snap in a game.
This is what has happened at our large middle school. You have 60+ kids on the 3rd/4th grade team, and then they get to 7th/8th and they can’t even find 15 kids left that want to play.

That's probably the biggest single issue with youth sports participation in general (potentially not football specifically), especially in areas that have had a lot of net migration away from them over the last fifty years like Ohio.

The problem in Baton Rouge is the liberals have designated EVERY single school as “magnet”. So the good football players just go wherever they want to play football by saying they’re there for the program.
Magnet in Baton Rouge is nothing more than just regular normal kids. Unless of course they want to get into BRHS where admissions only allows the top applicants. Even Tara HS has magnet; and Bellaire. All the average and even the worst schools are magnet now.
