I'd say it is more like 1.5A.

However he isn't wrong on the pay, several SEC coaches make top half of MLB money. MLB managers just don't seem to make much, it drops off so fast.

quote:

13 Kevin Cash Tampa Bay Rays $1.66 million
T-14 Derek Shelton Pittsburgh Pirates $1.5 million
T-14 Carlos Mendoza New York Mets $1.5 million
16 A.J. Hinch Detroit Tigers $1.2 million

quote:

UT Tony Vitello $3.25 million
VU Tim Corbin: $2,123,797
UF Kevin O'Sullivan: $1.77 million
LSU Jay Johnson: $1.675 million
Ole Miss Mike Bianco: $1.625 million
UA Dave Van Horn: $1.45 million
MSU Chris Lemonis: $1.325 million
USC Mainieri: $1.3 million
AU Butch Thompson: $1.275 million

Pretty crazy. 9 SEC coaches would be in the top 16 paid in MLB. 4 would be in the top 12.

What? No it isn’t. Tony has proven himself at the college level. Go to the MLB and see how it works out. If it doesn’t, he would be a hot commodity to come back for multiple top college programs.

Yeah it is win win for him. Gets to jump to the majors at 47, if it doesn't work out and he's out in 2-3 seasons he's 50 and can take whatever top college job he wants that is available at the time.

To be clear Tony will be fine and make a ton of money regardless I just mean as far as coaching success

And yes it is unprecedented, no college coach has ever gone straight to managing a MLB team at least not that I've been able find info of

Tony's used to recruiting the best guys and going out with the best of the best at his level. He's not gonna have that in the MLB and who knows if grown men will even respond to his style. I'm not saying it's unlikely he will succeed but there's plenty of reason to think he might not

Is Tony an analytics guy? Because it seems like most MLB managers just look at a paper and do what some nerd told them to do. Very few actually manage a game.

He just signed an extension 3 days ago. Maybe Coastal knew something.

I know. JOSH jordan will be on the short list but it may be an interim for this season.

He’ll have Drew Gilbert teaching the Giants organization how to be a grade A douchebags like they were at Tennessee

That's not right. He makes over $3MM. The list may be outdated. It doesn't really change your point though.

Correct. He could fail in the pros and still be a top choice for any baseball program looking to hire.

I actually hope he has success in the pros if he goes.

Ah okay, I got it from here it says 2025 but may just be wrong or not updated if his raise was more recent.

A college coach leaving to manage an MLB club would be wild. Unlike football and basketball, that’s the one sport where there’s a big wall between college and pro head coach that never gets crossed.

Another SEC team said the same thing an about 18 months ago. They were preseason #1 and watched postseason from the crib.

Minor league managers make significantly less than either. Their salary is a fraction of top tier college coaches.

There are only a handful of minor league coaches that top $100K.
