Would have made zero sense to trade three first round picks to draft a wide receiver even one who is as good as Chase. 49ers should have just stayed put at 11 and taken Micah Parsons or Rashawn Slater.

I don’t recall that QB class being hyped? Only one that was an elite(generational) prospect was Lawrence. The rest were very mehh

What's your rationale behind this?

I think the only thing he needs is time to develop. He has the arm, speed, elusiveness. You can tell he is a competitor/cares about the game and he has shown progression.

True, but I would imagine some of that is to hype up the draft. This is still easily the best looking class since 2020.

when i saw the headline "chase to the 49ers" i 'd at it.

Chase Young is still good, but thought they were about to be unbeatable.

Look at the 1999 Draft-

quote:

Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round — Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper, and Cade McNown — the second most (along with the 2018 and 2021 drafts) after the 1983 NFL Draft.

McNabb lived up to the billing as did Culpepper. Couch was a bust, a lot of it having to do with injuries. Akili Smith and Cade McNown were busts, most of it having to do with being Akili Smith and Cade McNown, respectively.

m of a firm belief that drafting a qb when there's other glaring holes is a bad investment. Sometimes it works out (Joe Burrow and the Cincy Oline) but it seems theres more instances of it going sideways. Build the lines and receiving corps first then go get your guy. Yes it's a longer process but it pays off, if done right, IMO.

But then you get in 9-7 purgatory and can never draft the franchise qb

And the examples of this working are…..?

If you have to have a QB, because of this teams over draft guys and often don’t develop them. A lot of the bust QBs are with terrible franchises. They hire and fire coaches quickly so young QBs wind up with multiple OCs learning new systems and very couple of years. Look at the Bears they trade up and take Tribusky but fire the coach after his rookie year. They drafted Fields and fire the coach after his rookie year.

Zach Wilson has shown flashes of being really good, but was set up to fail with the Jets.

They have one of the best young teams in the NFL, NAILED the draft last year with Gardner, Garret Wilson, JErmaine Johnson, Breece Hall, and Max Mitchell and have arguably the best overall defense in the entire league. The only missing piece is QB. They are a 10 win team with a Joe Namath at QB.

And he is over 80 years old.

Wilson showed last night that he has elite physical tools but Vinny Testaverde is the only guy I can think of who was a physical freak and kept getting chances for years until he finally figured it out mentally.

He had the Kansas City game but that's about it. For the #2 pick in his third season he's showing he's not even just a competent game manager yet.

Mac is probably just a backup, if he checks his ego, but he was failed by the Pats.
Fields has some tools but he is failed by the Bears.
Lance has barely played more than me.

I never understood why Wilson got so much love. He wasn't that great at BYU

Caleb is a unicorn, the dude's got the tools and yeah he may not be the easiest guy to deal with but neither was Rodgers. Maybe his attitude cripples him in the NFL but I could see otherwise.

The problem with Williams is he has been allowed to get into very bad habits and is always trying to go for the "savior" play rather than standing and hitting guys on time. If that can't be fixed, he will not last long in the NFL.

He was amazing at BYU his last year both by the eye test and with 33/3 and 74% completion.

The problem with evaluating both him and Fields their last year in college was that both had great offensive lines so they were throwing without pressure for the vast majority of the time.

Daniels is a much better passer and while he's good in a straight line, he's not close to Lamar in lateral movement and overall running ability.
