I think it was John Kruk who said, "I'm not an Athlete, I'm a baseball player, there's a difference".
Probably applies to a lot of baseball players throughout history.

David Wells
He has a really interesting life story and was very athletic.
quote:
Wells was born in Torrance, California.[1] His parents were never married. He was raised by his mother, Eugenia, a member of Hell's Angels also known as "Attitude Annie".[2] Wells grew up with the belief that his father, David Pritt, was dead. However, at the age of 22, he learned that Pritt was alive and tracked him down to start a new relationship with him. Growing up in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego[3] where he attended local public schools, Wells was dependent on his mother, who worked numerous jobs to support him and his four siblings. He graduated from Point Loma High School, where he played baseball and basketball, in 1982 and was a self-described "gym rat" who spent most of his time at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center and Robb Field.[4] Wells was Point Loma High School’s star pitcher and threw a perfect game his senior year.[5]

Him and Maddux have to be in the top 5 or 10. Golf's a little different story, I guess baseball is to a certain degree.

I'm not saying that he isn't athletic, just that I don't know if he'd even make an MLB roster today. Shortstops have gotten bigger in size and hit for power. He was 5'10", 150lbs. Heck, most SEC schools most likely wouldn't give him a scholarship to play. He could definitely make it for defense but in today's game, it's how many homeruns, doubles, triples can you hit, defense is almost an afterthought.

Were the pads around his midsection to prevent opposing players from getting sucked into his gut?

Who looked at the hefty lefty and thought “Yep, he needs rib protection”

I love the story of John Stockton as member of the dream team. He would walk around Barcelona with his wife/family completely unhindered .... There's a picture I think...if him below a MJ mural. He would walk 30 ft behind teammates ( in street clothes ) ...calm peaceful as they were getting hounded for autographs
I love Chris Webber on Stockton:
"We would play him in the playoffs, I'd make rookies wait on the bus and say, watch the baddest man in the world pull-up and they like, 'what do you mean,' they think I'm going to talk about his cars and all this and John Stockton would come to the game, literally in a MINIVAN, pop the kids out and come in there and bust us up"

Crazier to me is the fact that THIS DUDE was also an all conference basketball player at San Diego State and actually drafted by the Clippers on the same day as he was picked in the MLB draft.

When Ruth started setting the world on fire in 1920, he was 6-2, 215 of solid muscle. The added poundage came later.

Yogi may not have looked athletic but he had cat-quick reflexes and surprising running speed and was strong as an ox.
Hell he used to play ice hockey for fun until the Yankees made him quit.

Dude lived to 87. Something to be said for saying frick it and indulging in your vices on your own terms.

Len Dawson might not have looked the unhealthiest, but smoking and drinking during halftime of the Super Bowl couldn't have been good for his health.
Probably why we lost him at the tragically young age of 87.
ETA: I took so long to come back and finish that post that theballguy beat me to it.
