Garbage. The BCS has been far better than the old system. And it is not even close.

Here's what they should do: just take the top 5 SEC teams and put each one in a bowl against one of the 5 other highest ranked teams.
The bowls this year would be something like:
ND vs Bama
Oregon vs Florida
Stanford vs UGA
LSU vs Oklahoma
A&M vs Kansas State
Tell me that isn't a MUCH better bowl lineup

You just don't get it. If it weren't for the BCS, teams like Florida State and Louisville wouldn't be playing in these games. Before the BCS, the bowls were used to determine which SEC team was the best. The reason was because the regular season was only 11 games, 4 of which were OOC. So, it was much harder to tell which SEC team was the best, especially before the conference championship game. The games would have looked like this in 1997:
Rose [granddaddy]:
Alabama v. Florida
Sugar:
LSU v. Georgia
Orange:
Vandy v. Miss St.
Fiesta:
A&M v. SCAR
frick the BCS!

where a wretched Big East gets a seat at the table

Wisconsin vs. Stanford

four of the best teams in CFB get left out: #5 Georgia, #7 LSU, #9 Texas A&M, #10 South Carolina
Actually, Bama would be in the Sugar Bowl so Florida and Notre Dame would only replace N Illinois and Louisville.
You can complain about the Big East and smaller conferences, but pretty funny how outside of the SEC and Pac-12, those "big" conferences don't do all that well.
Highest Winning Percentages By Conference
Conference Percentage (Record)
Mountain West .750 (3-1)
Southeastern .696 (16-7)
Western Athletic .667 (2-1)
Pac-12 .611 (11-7)
Big East .500 (7-7)
Big Ten .480 (12-13)
Big 12 .474 (9-10)
Atlantic Coast .133 (2-13)
Independents .000 (0-3) <-- Notre Dame

Watch the FCS playoffs and then turn off the TV. They'll get the message eventually.

In the old system:
Gumps get the autobid to the Sugar, Notre Dame gets invited for the other spot.
Rose is still Wisconsin vs. Stanford.
The Big 8/12 changed its tie in, so K State either goes to the Orange (old school) or Fiesta (current tie in). UGA gets the invite to play against them.
The ACC didn't have a tie in to one of the Big 4, but I could see the Orange (new system) or Fiesta (old system) inviting Florida State and Oregon.
Still don't have must see TV for all of the traditional NYD bowls.

It'll be interesting to see the numbers from the Chicago market for NIU's Orange Bowl appearance.

People continuing to rail on the BCS make no sense. It's over.
I love how people are only just now starting to hate the BCS when it's about to end.
Some of us have hated the BCS since 1998. I guess that makes us the hipsters of CFB.

if you read into what they're saying, they hate the bowls and not the BCS
go read the OP again. he complains about wisconsin going to the rose and blames the BCS for the big10 champ playing in the rose
yeah...that never happened before the BCS

The BCS needs to be tweaked to allow for the best At least give us viewers something to watch. Not a true playoff system per se, but match ups of BCS top 10 ranked. Let the bowls choose 1 team from a conference tie in and then have to choose the higher ranked team for a 2nd team. Would look something like this for this year:
NC - #1 Notre Dame vs #2 Bama
Sugar - #3 Florida vs #4 Oregon
Fiesta - #5 K. State vs #8 LSU
Rose - #6 Stanford vs #7 Georgia
Orange - #12 Fl State vs # 9 TX A&M

Fiesta - #5 K. State vs #8 LSU

Orange - #12 Fl State vs # 9 TX A&M

ESPN is a big problem in all of this. They have TV deals with all of the conferences and they show all of the BCS games. These games have become a TV event and not an attendance event. The result is a watered down postseason, nothing like postseasons of the past.
I also think the conference championship games have been a debacle. It produces BCS games with teams of 5 losses like Wisconsin. Ga. Tech was a TD away from being in a BCS game - at a record of 7-6. And attendance has just been horrid. There should be no "automatic qualifier" for a conference winner.
I think the best system would be a free market. Let the bowl games be open to all comers, and select the best teams.

The problem is conference championship games in which an upset puts an "undeserving" team in the BCS. This is multiplied when you have multiple teams on probabation from bowls and uneven divisions. We saw this last year with UCLA in the pac12 title game. The BCS Bowls should just scrap the whole thing. Only requirements should be no more than 2 schools from a single conference unless one is playing in the MNC. No way should the peachbowl have better matchups than the rose, orange, and sugar.

you really put an SEC team in every game?
so the SEC gets HALF the BCS TV money?

i agree that conference title games frick up things more than they help

if OSU/PSU were not on probation, the bowls would shake out a lot better
Title: OSU-Notre Dame
Sugar: Alabama v. OU
Fiesta: KSU v. Oregon
Rose: Stanford v. Florida
Orange: FSU v. UL

yeah, that's just stupid. We had unranked 7-4 Pac 10 teams (UCLA) in the Rose Bowl in the 80's a couple of times and they would beat 1 loss B1G teams

there is no way the big10 and pac12 would allow the SEC to take 50% of the postseason money while they got scraps
Right. And the dumbasses on ESPN last night obviously have no idea how the real world works. Herbstreit was saying, "I don't care what you do with the money, just divide it up and split it equally, but put the best teams in the BCS bowls regardless of conference." Sure, the SEC is going to just take a 1/6 split of the money when they're providing 1/2 of the teams. Yea, Herbie, that would work out perfectly.

I like the BCS overall. Sometimes the matchups suck but I believe it gets it right more than the old system. LSU has thrived under the BCS system.
