if OSU/PSU were not on probation, the bowls would shake out a lot better
NIU would probably still be ranked in the top 16 so:

Sugar: Alabama v. OU
Wouldn't happen. It's probably Bama vs NIU...

if OSU could be ranked, wouldn't this have bumped NIU down to non-auto ranking?
if OSU and PSU could be ranked, it certainly would have
*ETA: nebraska not losing in the title game also gives another wedge

they are 15th, so with OSU, they could be 16.

Let's say we had the old format, before bowl alliances, BCS, conf. championship games.. and we had 5 big bowls on NY's Day. It would shake out sort of like this:
Rose: Stanford vs. Nebraska
Cotton: K-State vs. A&M
Fiesta: Florida vs. Oregon
Sugar: Alabama vs. Notre Dame
Orange: Georgia vs. FSU
So,it would be more entertaining and still give us a champ.

Florida State vs. Northern Illinois, in a match up that doesn't feature a top 10 team. They will be giving these tickets away.
The Orange Bowl has gotten a lot of these kinds of crap games since the BCS switched to a double-hosting model.
Remarkably, though, this is the first time they've gotten stuck with the non-qualifier. Even the Rose Bowl got stuck with one (TCU) before they did.
Then again, they typically get stuck with the Big East champ. That's far worse than the non-qualifier these days.

CONFERENECE REALIGNMENT WITHING The BCS SYSTEM has destroyed the CFB postseason
When the Big East was a good Miami and VT, things were different and it made a lot of sense. It's not that way anymore.

you really put an SEC team in every game? so the SEC gets HALF the BCS TV money?
Well they make up majority of top teams this yr. but ok. Take one out and substitute OKlahoma. You get the point.

It's just a bad year in CFB. The bowls reflect that.

Its still better than the Old system:
Sugar: SEC
Orange: Big 8
Cotton: SWC
Rose: Pac 10/Big 10
What usually happened was unless Notre Dame and Penn State had great years, your top teams were tied up in these bowls. That meant an LSU and Oklahoma or OSU could not play each other. Period. It was VERY rigid and too often pitted a an undefeated team against a two loss team.
THEN Miami, FLorida State, and the Fiesta Bowl came along. Broke up the logjam. Throw in PSU and Notre Dame in the 80s and early 90's, then at least you had some flexibility. Then we got the BCS.
I don't like the BCS but I hate that system in the 70's and early 80's even less. LSU would not have played OU or OSU under the old system. We would play a top indy or second place team from another conference while OU did the same and we hoped they lost.

If there was no BCS it likely would have been FSU/Louisville. So it wouldnt have been top 10 teams regardless.
