And they're the lone conference survivor in the College Football Playoff. I have to admit, I did not see this coming. Really thought they'd be mid-tier in the SEC their first season. Not as bad as OU's first year, but didn't expect this either.
This is understandable and a good part/demonstration of what makes ‘em “Texas”.
The very first Big XII championship, we were right in the middle of our greatest run of years and there should’ve been no way we lost to Texas….except we did. I still have nightmares of James Brown at QB all these years later.
They even managed to get under the skin of Nebraska and we generally liked most everybody, lol.
Texas is who they are. They give no shites whether you like them or not. They may not win it all but they win enough where you’ll never humble them. I actually think a good Texas is good for college football because they generate emotions, good or bad.
That doctored up video of Texas joining the SEC (from Bradley Cooper in “American Hustle”) a couple years back was so on point.

Sankey handed them an easy schedule based on their previous ten year period where they were mostly bad, with the exception of 2023. Sooners got the harder slate because of how successful they had been the last ten years.
This has been discussed by local media when down at SEC media days interviewing Sankey.

Then you are not well informed. UT has big donors and thousands of acres of minerals in W TX. Why they don’t buy every top recruit is the real head scratcher

They didn’t play a single Big Six team on the road. Their schedule was a joke. Lost to Georgia both times they played them, and barely squeaked by ASU.
Texas’ defense is real, but overall they are a fraud.

I didn’t see “last team standing” coming specifically, but Texas doing well immediately was easily foreseeable IMO. They’ve recruited at an upper echelon SEC level for a while now, and they put together a great staff the last few years.
Oklahoma probably should have come in and done better, but their coaching staff is not good and their recruiting, while good, is a step behind the best in the SEC. That’s an interesting spot to watch because OU “should” be better than it is based on its available resources and its history. But they could also just botch the next hire and end up in the wilderness like Texas was last decade.

The SEC did them a really big favor by turning itself into the Big 12 just before Texas arrived.

Yes but if you remember back in 2012 when A&M joined, they just so happened to have had probably their best team in history with the emergence of Johnny Manziel while also Mizzou immediately coming in and playing for back to back SEC championships in 2013 and 14. So this doesn’t really surprise me what Texas is doing considering they were a playoff team last year with most of their key players back this year.

I’m well aware of both of those.
The big boys have been buying players well before NIL became a thing, and I just honestly thought they’d struggle to adjust to week after week SEC competition.

Texas is obviously on a big upswing the last few years but their SEC schedule this year was embarrassing. You couldn't have crafted an easier schedule if you tried.
6 SEC bottom feeders, OU who happened to be very down this year, and one tough opponent, which of course they got at home.

True but it’s still kinda funny bc you know aggy has to be seething
A&M had a decade head start in the conference, accomplished jack shite, and now get to sit back and watch their big brother attempt to win it all in year 1.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

They were preparing for their move to the SEC several years before 2024. They wanted to make an immediate impact and not try to figure it out when you get there, like OU is doing. This goes for all UT sports too. The higher ups and boosters at UT get shitted on a lot, but they did a good job at having UT athletics prepared for the SEC.
Just curious, how do you know this? What have they done specifically to prepare?

Took over the SEC SEC SEC with a bunch of big 12 players.

Texas will be disliked more than any other school before too long (if not already). People will long for the weird traditions of A&M being the worst thing out of the state of Texas affecting the SEC. Inviting Texas will one day be viewed as one of the worst mistakes the SEC has ever made, and it does seem like they had more advanced knowledge of joining the SEC than existing SEC members did.
As far as this season goes Texas had one of the easier schedules this season for both the sec and out of conference as they also got to play a Michigan team that was in disarray and still finding itself at start of the season even before getting to it’s season long offensive shortcomings. In play offs it got to play the 2 teams who only were in because of winning their conference championship. As soon as brackets announced it was obvious that Texas had the easiest route to the semis playing Clemson and then ASU, and Texas still needed a bad call to win against ASU.

Agree 100% with OP and shocked at the downvotes

Actually they did upgrade their facilities, and even though it was mainly due to the play of their helter skelter QB they had a pretty successful first year. Beat a #1 team (and eventual BCS champion), won cotton bowl against Big 12 co-champion, finished 5th in the AP poll, and had a player win the heisman trophy.
They could not sustain it, and although Texas will likely sustain their success in this new era of professional college football we probably should make them do so before crowning them with anything.

I think TX and ASU are comparable. If they play that game 7 times. One team wins 4-3.
Absolutely not. That 2OT game was ASU playing their out-of-this-world game and Texas stepping on its dick.
Texas wins 9/10 and the 1 ASU win would be a fluke.
