Both 2A games were fantastic
Ganado beating 15-0 Stamford in triple overtime after They missed an easy chip shot field goal at the buzzer in regulation to win it .

Hopefully these games set the tone for some close ones in the big classes. Last year had some major duds. I’ll be pulling for Woodville and Columbus today, but they are probably major underdogs.
I honestly think the 6A games set up for closer contests than last year.
The team I most want to see win would be Smithson Valley in 5A D1.

For a 3A team, Columbus has some talent. Tonight's game should be fun to watch.

Yeah, I kept being surprised that it was still going on.
I was working on an article and the game just kept continuing.

Finally got a clunker with Gunter as they’re dominating woodville. These lanky athletic white kids can play

Happy for Gunter as their superintendent is a good friend as we worked together as assistant principals in College Station.

It’s incredible how the DFW area (expanded) has just completely taken over even down to lower classes. I feel like when I was a kid, the Houston/East Texas area kind of had the upper hand.

Gunter 3-peats
That’s impressive as hell especially with all those teams in Texas

It is so strange to see Vandergriff listed as Austin when it is in the Leander ISD; I guess the same can be said about Westlake; they are not in the AISD either.
UIL lists schools by the cities (or nearest cities) where they are located, not the district.

They're the next town to grow in that direction, they're just north of Celina on 289. Plus with the new semiconductor plant in Sherman, they pick up from that area too.

Grayson Rigdon from Columbus is a great story.
He’s going for his 4th straight State Championship with his 3rd school (his dad is an assistant coach).
His first 2 schools were Strawn and Benjamin, which is interesting because Strawn and Benjamin both play 6-man football. This is his first season playing 11 man football, and he’s close to 2,000 yards rushing for the season. He signed with Wyoming.

Houston area school districts have been building new campuses like crazy the last decade. That spreads out some of the talent, and puts new schools like Katy Paetow in the playoffs instead of the same old familiar teams stacking up talent.
North Texas districts seem OK with growing existing campuses, which means that small towns that are absorbing DFW expansion are bigger than they used to be. Urban Dalls drops off as a result.
San Antonio seems to have dropped off a lot from my high school years. Converse Judson used to be a perennial.

And that’s why I think the “super school” bullshite around DFW sucks. Every classification is balanced from an enrollment standpoint, but once you hit 6A you have a school like Allen facing off against someone with 1000 less students.
Yup. Converse ISD has 3 schools now. Comal ISD added 2 more campuses, but Smithson Valley still has their chance. Northside ISD has added 4 new campuses in about 15 years and each one has 6A numbers. In terms of competing at football statewide, it hurts.

Plano, Mckinney and Frisco all have multiple high schools which hurts them compared to Allen which only has one.
Also these towns are becoming less interested in Football and more interested in Calculus and getting students into colleges if you know what I mean.

Frisco is interesting. It was a one HS town all the way until 2000. They’ve since added 9 high schools (I think), but all are at the 5A level, so they can still compete for football titles without the mega school approach.

Have any of those school made the title game recenlty?

Lone Star made it, but that was in 2015. Emerson lost in the semis to SOC last year. I think Frisco is in the region with Denton Ryan and Aledo, so that presents another problem. I’m just saying those Frisco schools still have the resources to compete for a state title.

Yeah. IDK. I think Plano, Frisco, and Mckinney schools have a lot of asian, Indian, and hispanic kids nowadays which doesn't seem to help your chances of of playing high level football.
Though Copell is becoming like that and I think they fielded a good team this year.
