There’s been some big changes to the NIT, so it makes sense in that context.

You no longer play in MSG (that was always a big draw).

They no longer have autobids for conference champs that didn’t win their tournament. Which is a huge hit for mid-majors and that waters down the competition IMO.

ETA: And the whole transfer portal situation has been pointed out.

It’s a shame because the NCAA could’ve really bolstered the tournament by delaying the portal opening.

I don't understand why the NCAA is always in such a hurry to get the Transfer Portal open or to get National Signing Days moved up.

Transfer Portal should open the day after national championship game in both football and basketball, but I guess that makes too much sense, of which the NCAA has none.

The players have been constantly practicing since October. At this point in the season they are all dealing with some degree of injury/pain. They don’t feel like going through more work for a basically meaningless tournament.

Not sure why they’re in a hurry for basketball since it’s mid-semester but football is when it is because schools have already started their spring semester if you wait until after the championship game, or if they haven’t yet there wouldn’t be enough time to explore options before the registration deadline.

Teams turning down invites to the NIT is just silly. It’s basically the Music City Bowl/Texas Bowl/Liberty Bowl of college basketball. You never hear of football teams turning down leaser bowl games.

68 out of 362 Div. 1 teams make the NCAA tournament.

82 out of 134 FBS teams go to bowl games.

Ole Miss also. I love the NIT, but I think it's time for it to go if quality teams decline to participate. Is there not money to be made, or do teams lose money participating?

The main reason I can think of is if they had players threatening to sit out.

So push back the big dance a few weeks? Hard pass on that.

Idk about practice. Tournament starts tomorrow. Maybe a quick film session on the plane. I think if you have the chance to play you do it for your players. Disappointed for missing the big dance? Sure. Still have an opportunity to go out and let your guys compete. Some for last time in their career. If they don’t want to play then you failed as a leader.

That's because often times the conferences have contracts with the bowl games that aren't really governed by the NCAA. And the schools, as part of the contract, have agreed to play. Plus, the payouts are much more lucrative. For example, the Music City Bowl total payout was $5.7 million last year.

For schools participating in the NIT the travel and expenses are paid for by the NCAA. However, the teams only get around $5,000 for each round in which they participate. Thus, the schools don't have a huge financial incentive to play. If the players want to opt out it's no big deal.

I think Penny turned it down because... well... his team had already given up because they all pretty much hated each other.
