The balls and bats they were using would also play a factor in this

mean, we know the dimensions of ballparks back then and they were often much deeper than they are today. Ruth wasn't just popping it over a 200 ft fence 50 times a year. Yankee Stadium in the 20s was 460 to left center, 490 to center, and 430 to right center, and Ruth frequently hit balls out to center field. Navin Field (where Ruth allegedly hit the 575 foot blast) was 467 to center.

Unless every single sports writer was just blatantly lying, Ruth did hit 460-490+ foot homeruns with regularity. I don't really see how that's disputable.

I just find it hard to believe that he did something a hundred years ago that no one in the modern Era, in the pinnacle of nutrition / strength & sports training, has been able to match.

Could he have? Sure.. Maybe. But gun to my head I'm putting my money on no way

Do you also find it hard to believe that no one has hit .400+ in a season since Ted Williams in 1941? Or that no one has managed to hit a ball in more than 56 straight games since Joe DiMaggio did it in 1941?

Amazing to see what records Mantle would have if he didn't destroy his body with alcohol.

Also, I think strength and conditioning has had less of an effect on baseball than it has on say football or basketball. I mean think about it, what muscles are used swinging a bat? The forearms, the core, the glutes, and probably a few others. But not the big ones that are responsible for the freak athletes of today like the quads, hamstrings, back, and chest. I honestly don't think that modern training methods produce drastically stronger forearms and midsections than just constantly playing baseball, which is what the old guys did.

Idk I might be wrong on all that but I really think Ruth hit bombs with regularity. Not 575 foot homers, but certainly in the 450 or even 490+ range.

Mickey Mantle hit the furthest home run of all time. Imo, had he not blown up his knee his rookie season, he’d be the greatest player of all time.

There are just a lot of younger fans who think it impossible for Ruth to have done some of the things he did given his body type.

The problem is people associate his body type with how he looked toward the end of his career.

Ruth listed as 6-2, 215lb
Pujols listed as 6-3, 235lb
Mike Trout listed as 6-2, 235lb

Here is Ruth in 1920

He was known for blasting them dead center at the Polo Grounds. I think it was around 490'.

Polo grounds was famous for having center field wall at 485 feet and only 4 times in 60 years did someone clear the center field wall in games. We saw the steroid era with body builders playing baseball and we didn’t see anyone hitting above 530 feet. Three of the last 4 years we’ve had a ball hit over 500 feet in games. If today’s athletes seem to max out at about 505 feet then I can’t believe guys back then could hit it anywhere close to 520 feet or above.

So imagine Mike Trout, with a bat several ounces heavier than what he’s got now, swinging away at an 80 mph fast ball with no movement.

So Ruth's homeruns were all either inside the park or straight down the line, and every single writer who covered his games conspired with each other to lie about it?

That's what the MSB claims. Ruth hit a lot of shots just left of center field that went enormous distances.

Babe Ruth , when he pitched, set the World Series consecutive scoreless innings pitched record around 1920 (29 innings) and held it until 1998 or so (Cant remember if Oral H broke it in 88 or someone during the lates 90s). His WS era is less than 1.0. He was THE best pitcher in the league and the best hitter all at the same time. He stopped pitching so he could get more at bats. That’s how good he was.

I saw McGwire hit one to the top of the colored section in the Astrodome with my own eyes. Longest dinger I'll ever see in my life.

Quick wrists that generate great bat speed can have just as much if not more effect on HR distance as having 20 inch biceps

The Astrodome still had a colored section when McGwire played?

sounds outrageous

and there's a place in Hot Springs, AR, where you can step off one he hit about 500' in a spring training game
