The class of 2022 players who already played 4 years were operating under the assumption that they had exhausted their NCAA eligibility and the NFL was their only option to continue playing. Then the NCAA changed the 5 for 5 rule in June...well after the NFL draft and after rookies were already in mini camp. Those players were completely unaware that they would have gotten a 5th year of eligibility if they had just graduated school and went to sell insurance instead of declaring for the NFL draft.
I have sympathy for that group of players only. Anyone from 2023 who declared for the draft after their junior year OR a 2022 player who took a redshirt season and still would have had a year of eligibility remaining under the old rules should not be allowed to come back if they left early for the NFL draft. But the 2022 players who played 4 seasons and were then moving on to the NFL draft because that was the only option to them in the spring, those players should be allowed to return if they get cut by their NFL team before the season starts.

these other players had no choice but to continue with their nfl pursuit at the time with NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE at the time.

The whole situation shows that college athletics are now one big joke. Hired mercenaries now instead of student athletes.

I'm fully aware of the order of events. Changing the rule in June and not providing provisions for the Class 2022 players means it was fairly obvious the NCAA had no intentions of grandfathering them in or applying the new rules to them.

And this is where we will agree to disagree. They signed a contract and took money from an NFL franchise. I would have sympathy for them if they had immediately tried to regain their eligibility and didn't attend fall camp.
However, trying to make the NFL roster first and using college football as their back up plan is absurd. They are trying to have their cake and eat it too. If they aren't good enough to make the 53 man roster then they can sign practice squad contracts or "join the 98% of NCAA athletes who go pro in something other than sports."

That argument is coming sooner rather than later.
The argument will be that the NCAA/major conferences have a de facto monopoly on the lucrative college football and college basketball marketplace. Thus, setting arbitrary rules such as in the number of years one is allowed to participate in the marketplace is an unlawful restraint of trade. The players will argue that as long as they are enrolled as a student at the university, they should be eligible to play college sports. Regardless of if that would be for 4 years or 10 years
The reactionary actions by the SEC, Big Ten, and other major conferences this week will only add support to the “monopoly” argument

They've been hired mercenaries for the most part going back to the mid 90s. It was just hidden back then.
I'm sorry but I could care less if the players are going to class and actually students are not. Maybe I'm just being a contrarian, but I just don't care.
We all know, even if they're going to class, they are largely taking joke classes and largely having their tutor do the work.
Just focus on the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back of the jersey. That's my mentality at this point. I cheer for LSU, the individual players who are wearing the jerseys mean nothing to me.
