Welp. Good luck Caps. Sure as hell cant cheer for the Pens. One positive I took for the Jackets: Seth Jones is a monster. Keep him in Columbus a long time.

Columbus still hasn't learned how to play hockey against playoff caliber teams. Torts needs to figure that out and simply put...Sergei Bobrobsky HAS to perform better in the post season. I don't care..4-17 is a terrible post season record for the supposedly best goaltender in hockey. Good news is that this CBJ is super young team with the potential to get so much better.

Yeah Jones and Panarin are badass. CBJ will be just fine going forward. Get a little more help for Panarin and they’ll be a tough out going forward.

Yeah after Columbus took the first two in Washington, I thought they were in the money and we were in for another Caps collapse. Things turned around quickly, Washington turned it on in the final 3-4 games.
CBJ has a lot of good pieces in place, Panarin is a great player as well as Seth Jones, and that Atkinson guy is no slouch. Not sure what exactly they need to do to get to the next level but they have a decent base of players.

Trade Dubinsky (would be a miracle if they find someone to take on his shite contract) and Foligno. These guys are just dead weight now that take up way too much cap space based on their lack of production.

Caps were the better team all series, and the results finally caught up to the run of play. The Jackets had an outstanding final period tonight, but it was too little, too late. Panarin was the best player the first half of the series, and then the Caps figured him out and Torts had no counter move. But that top pair of theirs is beastly.
Simply put, the Caps aren't as good as they've been. They were lucky to win the division and don't have the depth anymore to match up with Pittsburgh. Let's see if being worse gets better results, but I'm not too encouraged. We'll see.

Boone put up 32 points with a terrible first half of the season at 2.9 million. Getting him at 3–3.5 would be good value.
Dubinsky had whopping 16 points while making 5.8. Foligno had 33 while making 5.5.
Getting Dubinsky off the books should be priority #1.

Boone's RFA and you can probably re-sign him for around $3.5 mill for 3-4 years or so. I think that's doable. Matty will be tougher as UFA. I'd love to sign him for somewhere around $2 mill for 2-3 years, but don't know if he'd accept that.
I'd love to re-sign Cole but he could be looking for something in the $4-5 mill range for 4 years and I think that's too much. I'd bring back Vanek for another year or two if he's willing to keep his same salary. If Letestu is willing to take a major hometown discount (I'm talking under $1 mill for 1-2 years) I'd bring him back, otherwise let him walk.
Obviously, dumping Dubinsky would be huge but he has (major) negative value and a NTC on top of that, so virtually impossible to trade him, unless you maybe throw in our first round pick on top of it or something really drastic like that. I think if you buy him out after next season (not this one) the cap hit from it becomes pretty manageable.
Ultimately the most important move of the offseason is re-signing Panarin. The one bright side of his disappearing act to end the series (I still think he might have been fighting an injury) is it might have driven down his cost. If you can do a long-term deal (anything six years or longer) for anywhere in the $8-9 mill range, I think that's good/fair to both sides.
The huge, huge question mark this offseason is Bob. If he's willing to comeback for less than what he makes now, then re-sign him. But if he wants more (and after Price's deal, I think he likely will) I'd shop him. I think we'd do better with an average NHL starter (not Korpi or a below-average starter) and an extra $4-5 mill in cap space to spend on a forward or two than Bob with a similar roster to what we have now.

I don't think this is a real teardown for Columbus. Panarin is f'n awesome. He was great, and the Caps adjusted in Game 3 to essentially state "We're not going to lose to this guy so we're going to trail him all over the ice and never give him an ounce of space. We dare anyone else to beat us." And they couldn't. The knock isn't on Panarin, it's on the supporting cast, who needed to step up when the Caps threw everything at shutting down Panarin.
Jones and Werenski are a great top pair. You an make a good case that outside of Nashville, it's the best top pair in the NHL. Jones is locked up on a team-friendly deal, do the same for Werenski. Oh, look. Jack Johnson is coming off the books this year! Give his money to Werenski.
The problem for Columbus is there are a lot of big money longterm deals for guys who are... okay, I guess? Dubinsky has 3 more years at $5.85m, Wennberg has 5 years at $4.9m, Foligno has 3 at $5.5m, and Atkinson has SIX years at $3.5m. That really hamstrings your flexibility. Atkinson had 20+ goals and Wennberg is still fairly young, but... ouch.
That's just shy of $19 million of cap space committed to four guys for the next three years who combined for 53 goals and 77 assists. Take away Atkinson's 24-22-46 at a team-friendly $3.5 and you have three guys making $14.5 million to score 29 goals and 55 assists. That's not horrible, but you need more from that kind of outlay at the top of your roster. Columbus lost in the middle, and if you look at the best teams in the league, they all have center depth. CBJ desperately needs centers. Wennberg would benefit greatly getting pushed down the lineup. Hell, look at the top 3 centers for the other Metro playoff teams:
PIT: Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel
WSH: Kuznetsov, Backstrom, Eller
PHI: Giroux, Couturier, Konecny
That's the standard. Columbus is nowhere near that right now. Luckily, there's this Tavares guy who is a free agent. Throw the money truck at him.

It's worse because Atkinson's AAV actually gets bumped up to just under $6 mill starting next year with the extension. I think that's still prob okay for him (might not be the last 2-3 years but it's fine for now). We have some fair deals (Wennberg, Anderson, Nutivarra, etc. etc.) and Jones is grossly underpaid, but the Dubinsky and to a lesser extent Foligno deals hurt.
