I remember reading a story that he had a post surgery infection and that amputation was an option. I guess this is what they were talking about. Holy shite

I remember being shocked and kind of saying "No way it's that bad" when they were talking about possible amputation. Holy shite though. I'm surprised he still has his leg

I just can’t believe they tried to plate it instead of an intramedullary nail. Much higher risk of infection especially considering the fracture blisters that are seen.

Alex would be stupid to even think of a comeback let alone attempt one. He almost lost his leg and his life. I'd say the fact he is still alive and walking is a huge win in life. Call your self ahead and walk into the sunset.

Holy frick that looks awful. Alex, you had a great ride. Made a lot of money and threw alot of touchdowns. Now it's time for you to retire. No one will think less of you for doing so, either.

Somehow, i image this is what Grant Hill was dealing with, and it probably looked similar to this but on his foot. If you all remember, Grant Hill had several ankle surgeries to repair damage, and had a severe infection like Smith's, that just like Smith, almost killed him, and almost took his foot.

I’ve been doing anesthesia for 20 years and I’ve never seen an intermedullary nail put into a tib/fib fracture. I’ve only seen them in femurs. I’m not saying it can’t be done but if his fracture was complicated, I’m not sure an IM nail would work.
