The first warning was worse. It was for celebrating after he won a race…

I'm not sure what's dumber, the rule or showboating after being warned.

Reading the thread title I came in here ready to bash the guy but that's ridiculous. Hopefully they win their appeal and hopefully they hang a banner even if they don't.

The first warning was far more egregious. What the gell are they doing getting a penalty for this?

The race is over. What the hell is he being “warned” about?

Watch the video in the link, the 2nd place finisher knew right away, looks like he told him that he was DQ. He walks up to him says something and points the baton, he then he reacts.

Personally, I wouldn't want to win that way.

I would bet almost every single winner did what the disqualified guy did if you looked into it

They will get their title back

Nothing the kid did in either video was taunting, aggressive, unsportsmanlike, or anything else.

What a terrible decision from the official and the association.

Thank goodness. Now this story will die a quick death.

The Observer reviewed several photos of other athletes who participated in the state championships Saturday and found many had similar celebrations to the one that got Mallard Creek disqualified.

Does the Observer state that it was the others’ second violation of the rule? Or does it at least state whether or not they receive a warning for similar actions before finishing the race? There is no point in bringing up not getting a disqualification if those others had not received a first warning before these gestures.

Quote from article not rule book:
quote:

By this national rule, athletes are not permitted to celebrate, hold up their hands in victory or clench fists while crossing the finish line or completing a trial. Additionally, the rule says a runner must complete the activity before any celebration begins.

It seems like the key question is about the first violation and it’s warning. If not valid then he just gets a warning for breaking the rules for the 1600 relay event and is not disqualified for a 2nd violation of the rule, and he did break the rule on the relay regardless of whether you agree with the rule or not.

They are also saying they were not given a warning or made aware of the first violation. That could be BS, but it is the first violation and it’s subsequent warning that should be appealed for whether a rule was truly broken and/or whether a warning was properly given and communicated and not the violation he committed later before finishing the 1600 relay as that was obviously against the rules.

None of the others ever got a first warning for doing it.

This judge was fricking retarded or out for this one team. Seems fairly obvious

If I remember correctly, he turned around and looked at his opponents and came in backwards across the finish line.

Clown behavior.

I one time got my arse absolutely smoked by Quan Cosby in the 100 and even though we all knew he was going to murder us he was cool and shook all our hands before and after the race. Just finished 10 meters ahead of the rest of us and waited for us to cross the line and congratulated us.

Mostly unrelated, but a cool story.

Creating "sportsmanship" rules for athletes doesn't make sense unless the athletes themselves have a problem with what's being done

WRONG!
If the rules are clearly defined, and you choose to break the rules, you pay the price.
The rules were clearly defined, he was even given a warning earlier, and he clearly decided to flaunt said rules (because they didn't apply to him), so he and his team (because of HIS selfish attitude) paid the price.

Why can you people not understand that when you enter a competition with set rules, then choose to break those rules, that there are consequences?

frick all the excuses!!!

Unpopular opinion but I don't really give a hoot about policy or rules on their own. Imo rules should be subject to good sense & reason. We're talking about high school track, not the 10 Commandments.

Reality is harsh, but the goal of a track & field competition is to be better, faster, & stronger than the rest of the field. This kid whupped arse & outdid everyone else, bottom line. Why shouldn't he celebrate?? Why should he be restricted so some 5th place loser's feelings aren't hurt? They all know he beat them, at the end of the day some arbitrary rule isn't changing that.

I don’t understand how this was considered more than just an excited athlete.

When a football player straddles a downed runner and flexes- should be a penalty.

Grabbing your crotch, giving choke signals, interacting with the other team in a contrived manner, ok you can flag them.

This?

No way.

Track officials are up there with HOAs on the power-hungry ladder. Especially the older ones.

He can celebrate. Just after the finish line.
