Shohei Ohtani's locker has been mostly cleared out at Angel Stadium, and the Los Angeles Angels declined to say why Friday night.

The two-way superstar missed his 11th consecutive game with an oblique muscle injury Friday night when the Angels lost 11-2 to the Detroit Tigers. Although Ohtani was at the stadium before the game, the soon-to-be free agent's locker was largely empty afterward.

Nearly all the personal items had been removed from his locker and the adjoining empty stall. A fully packed bag with a logo from the 2023 All-Star Game sat in front of his stall where his shoes would normally be, and only a few workout shirts hung on the rack.

Nearly a half-hour after reporters were allowed into the locker room and noticed the absence of Ohtani's possessions, an Angels spokesperson said the team will give more information about the development Saturday.

Edited to add update:

The Los Angeles Angels placed superstar Shohei Ohtani on the 10-day injured list with an oblique injury on Saturday. He's out for the rest of the season.

The news comes one day after Ohtani's locker at Angel Stadium had mostly been cleared out without an official explanation. He had missed the previous 11 games with the oblique injury.

Ohtani was already shut down as a pitcher this season because of a tear in his right elbow ligament but he continued to play as a hitter until straining his oblique in batting practice last week.

Ohtani, who went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA this season, leads the AL with 44 homers and his 1.066 OPS is second best in the majors. He is set to become a free agent this winter after six seasons with the Angels

It has to suck for the Angels that they did not trade Ohtani before the deadline.

The Angles were on a hot streak leading to the deadline, but completely imploded as soon as they decided not to trade him.

What’s the story here? Does he want out? I admittedly haven’t been following this.

Trout has a no trade clause, and wants to stay in OC. If the Angels let me go on vacation every July, I wouldn't want to leave either.

They shut him down because the team sucks, happens all the time. They are 13 games back.

Honestly, not sure how many teams would trade for an aging Trout who misses half of every season and has a mega contract

Could have traded for 2 or 3 pitching prospects and been good to go for the next few years while building some offense, but alas, it's the Angles. They'll be in the cellar with the A's for the next decade while paying Trout $35m/year to be Pujols v2.
There's no long term strategy there, no short term, nothing. Shohei got suckered into signing with them from the start and is outta there. I'm guessing SF is gonna sign him because SEA is going to have to pay up for Julio soon.

But I was told the advanced stats made him a baseball god on the level of Ruth, Mays, Griffey, and Bonds

Now that he is done playing in 2023, Ohtani is expected to have surgery as soon as possible to address the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow that ended his season as a pitcher near the end of August, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.
