As a fan, I hate TAMU as much as anyone, but don't kid yourself, they are a catch. Big school, good academics, huge huge endowment (dwarfs any endowment in the SEC I'd bet) and a nationally recognized athletic program. Plus, you get into the Texas market.

All true, including the "I hate TAMU" part.

they'd be one of the bottom 2-3 teams in the SEC right now.

i'm sure it's possible, but we risk being left out and ESPN hooking up with the pac16 in a year if we push it

There would still be other options. Double-header on CBS (nationally I mean). Versus for the JP caliber games (Versus has emerged as a legit player in sports thanks to their NHL coverage). TNT/TBS probably would want to get back in - adding GT in Atlanta wouldn't hurt from that respect.

And if ESPN took the Pac-16 then we'd obviously have the Fox Sports Network freed up. Fox might even want to start broadcasting regular season games on their big boy channel. Worst case maybe the "SEC Network" from ESPN to Fox Sports net.

ESPN doesn't have nearly as much leverage as you think they do. Yeah we all fricking love the ESPN 2nd tier night games but there are other options. TNT holds its own with ESPN in regards to the NBA playoffs.

Nice link....

I know everyone on this forum hates this...but it's true.

When your athletic program generates that much money and is worth $120m, you're a 10.

A&M is better.

they're not overly successful at football

they are above average historically, with a very large and rabid following.

their fanbase is fricking weird

true. but so are bama fans.

they don't provide one of these mythical tv markets

they have a strong houston and dallas presence. 2 huge markets.

plus great facilities, success in mutliple sports, bonfire skills, dead dogs in the endzone, and yes an extremely wealthy school is always a good addition.

TAMU has just made horrible fricking hires over and over. If they ever get a decent coach who can lock down even UT's leftovers in Houston, I don't see why they can't be successful. There's plenty of talent in that region to go around

you might want to look at the Pac-10's current TV contracts

Versus is where TV revenue goes to die

TAMU would not help the SEC. there is no national interest in TAMU. They aren't relevant outside to the diehards. screw them

Speaking of Texas, there was a pretty interesting, informative article written a few years ago about their decision to join the Big 12. The starts telling us a lot of information that most of us already knew about four pages in but the first three pages were pretty interesting reading to say the least.

right, they are traditionally a top 20 CFB program.

don't let the last 6-8 years blind you.

hasn't one of the problems over there been the lack of pressure from the fan base and boosters?

It is always a risk, but i doubt the PAC10 has much added leverage without Texas. If the SEC pulls them in or A&M we would pull the Houston market for sure & probably the Dallas & San Antonio markets too.
ESPN wants that market in addition to the SEC footprint now.

FSU & Miami do not add anywhere as close to the numbers that either Texas school can add. The University of Florida alreadys gets us those areas.
Same issue for Georgia Tech as Florida schools.

i was about to ask why we'd go to vs. when the pac10 is doing this to LEAVE vs.

But it's changing rapidly with expanded basic cable (and in HD no less) becoming the norm.

20 or so years ago when TNT/TBS started broadcasting the NBA playoffs we were all like "WTF?!?!" When ESPN got Monday Night Football we were all like "Holy shite?!?!"

The big boys (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC) have been diluted - especially among educated sports fans. If there's a great SEC game on ESPN2 it will be on in sports bars over Notre Dame/Air Force on big bad NBC.

I guess my point is that one day the revenues between ESPN and Fox/TNT/Versus will be a lot closer than it is now. It's already come light years in a very short time.

And anyway the SEC is in the catbird seat and we'll get ours. I'm not worried at all. ESPN wouldn't drop us IMHO.

you really think texas would come to the SEC? I don't think so because it would not make sense for them to jump from a pot into a frying pan. Plus, they would have to dump a bunch of those big XII rivalry games and still have to play OU every year (because they are not gonna dump them on their schedule)

that being said, if texas did come over and the SEC picks up clemson or GT then SEC would continue to dominate well into the the future

did you just link the NHL and television revenue?

Cause the NHL has done everything possible to avoid that

no.

i also think that they want to be a bigger fish relative to their conference peers.
