As I said, the teams would be subject to debate. I think UT will have a preference for the PAC-10, but I don't know that OU has any such preference. As long as we get two from UT, OU, and Nebraska I think it would work. Maybe instead it's OU, OSU, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Arky. OU and Nebraska might like to renew their rivalry.

That is basically where this is going...
BTW, I did a little research and TAMU's endowment is almost 6 billion dollars. I only bring this up because most SEC schools are in the 500 million range. Florida has 1 billion, Arky has 900 million and Vandy has 2.4 billion. I found that interesting/disturbing.

Definitely not to be ignored, plus consider the large, growing population centers in Texas.

The more I read about TAMU the more I think the SEC needs to gun for them.
Any Texas people out there have insight to the legislative/social dynamics behind splitting up Texas/TAMU?
ETA: Big 10 schools all have good size endowments. Texas and Stanford have 12 billion. The south is poor.

I'm in Texas, but I really don't know the dynamics of this one. We've seen the Big-10 e-mails that seem to indicate that Texas Tech is a consideration (thorn) in UT joining the Big-10. We've also seen Texas legislators starting to act when the PAC-10 left Baylor out. I'm not sure if this isn't more about making sure the other schools in Texas stay in a major conference and aren't left out of the mix than it is about keeping the Texas schools together.
I wonder... If the SEC invited UT, TAMU, TT, and Baylor, would keeping the Texas schools together be enough to sway UT? ...And if it did, would we want this?

you hear a lot of stuff from Texas about the academics being an issue - which considering the quality of the Big 12 seems like bullshite
Short answer the only Texas school that the SEC is interested in - and is interested in joining the SEC - seems to be Texas A&M
Tech (and maybe Baylor) are the freeloaders that the PAC might have to accept if they want Texas

I think the SEC would do whatever it takes to get Texas. I just don't see Texas agreeing to go to the SEC.

Yeah, but if UT is locked in with TAMU, Texas Tech and Baylor and the other 3 want to go to the SEC? Who's to say...

time was that Texas and Texas A&M were fairly inseparable. I think that may no longer be the case - so long as both major schools find a decent landing spot the legislature may not object
Worst case scenario for Tech and Baylor is Texas tries to go independent - then they are fricked

Texas does not want into the SEC. This seems to be the consensus from the school, it's alumni, and it's fans. Texas A&M on the other hand would like to join the SEC. I think Oklahoma follows whatever Texas does.

only reason why nd can survive being independent is the nbc deal.

I keep reading this on this thread. Do you have a link from a legit source? I haven't seen any news stories that say they are interested and would like to read up on it.

Don't have a link. I read in a news article the Texas A&M AD(Byrne?) said the SEC is a real possibility for his school. Texags.com is their main message board. The vast majority of their fanbase wants to break away from Texas and be the sole Texas school in the SEC.

Interesting statement from TX
Might be lip service to the Big XII before it jumps ship.
quote:
Longhorns officials also made it clear Sunday night that their intention is to stay in the Big 12.
One source basically laid out all of the things Texas has accomplished in the Big 12 (top revenue-producing athletic department at $125 million; a national title in football and another appearance in the BCS national title game; a Final Four in basketball; top licensing and marketing rankings) and said, "Why would we trade certainty for uncertainty?"
Might be lip service to the Big XII before it jumps ship.

Texas would love to stay in the big 12 but if other teams start jumping ship the big 12 won't be good anymore. Right now that conference revolves around Texas. I'm not sure on this but I heard Texas gets a bigger money cut then the other schools.

The Big XII has unequal revenue sharing for it's members. Schools like Texas and Oklahoma get more revenue based on their tv appearances. Schools like Iowa State and Baylor get less money. This is one of the big reasons Mizzou is ready to jump ship. They would make a lot more $$$ in the Big Ten.
