ajor college football is not just some "fun scholastic extracurricular." It's a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. Maybe second only to the NFL in terms of interest. Major conf. football is bigger than the NCAA and it has long been taking steps to separate from it.

What people don’t understand is that the actual product of college football is not good enough to justify it being second only to the NFL in terms of interest. It is the product PLUS the fans’ affinity for the different schools that made it into a huge industry.

But the changes in recent years all work against that school affinity part. An NFL minor league is not something anyone wants to watch, so if the fans of 95% of the schools realize they can’t compete, or many of the fans of 100% of schools begin to lose interest due to the money and the transfers etc etc, then who will be watching?

This kind of thinking drives me crazy. A big part of the beauty of college athletics is the diversity of schools that compete. Why do some people keep wanting to reduce it to a smaller and smaller group of semi-professional behemoths and leave everyone else in the cold? It seems that some people basically want to see college football reduced down to about 20 schools (give or take):

Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State.

Even as a fan of one of those schools, I want no part of that..

College football “died” in 2004 - when Auburn won the SEC, went undefeated, and EVERY SEC coach (except Houston Nutt) voted us 3rd and denied us a chance to play for the natty.

Since then, we get repeated conference expansions and we lose our annual rivals.

So, who cares what model we play in now? I only care about the team Auburn plays each week and nothing else. That won’t change.

The power conferences are paying about 23% while the NCAA national office foots 42% of the bill. The confounding part, many commissioners say, is that about 95% of the $2.77 billion in back-pay is intended to be distributed to power conference athletes.

Agreed

College football will end up being another victim of the streaming/content wars

Providers are desperate for live content people will watch, ESPN and co. decided to back door another professional football league in. They’re hoping gambling and fantasy draw in more casuals and replace the long time CFB/university fan.

Will be funny when the state schools in the SEC, ACC, Big 10 and Big 12 start passing laws that limit these snakes and using state facilities and associating themselves with the universities without the athletes actually being a part of the University.

If a kid is not attending class at the public university, he/she should not be allowed by the state to have access to school facilities and stadiums/arenas.

Actually go to school, become an employee of the school (binding contract and all, including income tax withholding, etc), or go pro.

This.

Whatever percentage of this penalty/backpay is going to P5 athletes is the percentage the P5 programs should be on the hook for.

the next decade or so (probably sooner), college football as we once knew it will be unrecognizable

It’s basically unrecognizable beyond the jerseys right now.

Instant eligibility transfers and NIL have kids playing against Bama in the NC and against their old school the next season.

It’s just minor league football being hosted at college stadiums.

Yep it’s mercenaries brought in to the highest bidder for a year , maybe two to play. You have no idea who they are or their stories. They’re just brought in to win, cash a check and leave . It kind of sucks.

Those cracks have been getting larger ever since they decided to go all in on splitting the P5 and G5.

Majority of the bowl games have empty stands. Many of the conference tournaments are played in front of no one. As someone noted, very few locals bothered to show up for Gane 3 of the college world series.

Outside of the top 20-30 teams, fans are showing they're OK with mowing grass instead of watching games of no consequence.

It's all inevitable, like it or not and I like some things and don't like other things about it but no one cares what I like or will change anything because of it.

One thing I hope it does is does away with the 3-4 unwatchable non-conference games so many Power 5 teams schedule every year. I'm paying for usually 3 games every year in Tiger Stadium that have very little appeal to me to go into the stadium and watch.

Some programs rely on those money games just to put a product on the field
