Unless you are a hardcore bama fan or a team similar that is always on the bubble and has that to keep up with. It would suck watching my Indiana squad dominate all season and then lose to a Syracuse team that just played cruise control until the tournament. Not complaining since I'm not a fan of any of these teams, but still give the #1 seeds SOMETHING. Make them have to lose twice or something.

True statement. They might as well just wait until March and just start with the tournament.

Then how would you know who gets in and who doesn't?

they really dont even need the tournament either. just have one game a year for the championship. probably doesnt even need to be two halfs. just play one.

tournament is exciting and fun to watch, but it's a crappy way to determine a champion.

The BCS, for all its faults, is the only system that rewards regular season accomplishment. Again, it sucked for LSU when the Bama rematch happened, but in general, if you make the NCG, you deserve to be there given what you accomplished during the year. There are no Wichita States making the NCG in football and that is a good thing.

Just pick teams from the major conferences like they do in football.

Why don't they deserve to be there? It's not like they won one game and they are in the final 4. They beat some quality teams to get there. They also had a pretty good regular season. Basketball isn't football. The talent gap in basketball is much less than it is in football, so these smaller teams are often just as good, if not better, than the big teams.

Bama fans should be experts on meaningless regular seasons, no?

a george mason or butler type team making a final four will always be a great story, but at the end of the day, id rather see two #1 seeds play a 82-77 type game in the championship than a 2 seed beating a 9 seed 64-58.

If the two #1 seeds deserve to be there they'll take care of business against the ones they're supposed to beat and get there.

I agree with Met, actually. I mean if you're the 60th best team in the country, why should you get to play for it all? A team could catch lightning in a bottle, shoot lights out from 3, catch a bad night from the other team, and end up making a deep run when everyone in the world knows they aren't the best team in the country. Do you really, and I mean REALLY think wichita state is one of the 4 best teams in the entire country?

The BCS gets a lot of flak, and some of it is deserved, but at the end of the day it's done its job well. The boise state's of the world don't deserve to play for it all because they play 1 hard game a year (which they have typically won) and then 10 sisters of the blind. "Oh, but they're undefeated!!" So? A major conference team with 1 or 2 losses is far more deserving than a team like boise in MOST cases.

And as has been mentioned, the BCS values the regular season. In CBB, it doesn't mean a whole lot since there's 30 games and all you have to do is make a field of 68. In CFB, every single game matters and counts for something, and the BCS most of the time has matched up the 2 best teams.

Maybe, but every team is capable of an off night. I just don't think it's right that a team can prove themselves all year, go something like 30-2 (I'm making this stuff up, not talking about any team in particular) in a power conference, win their conference, then just go cold in the first or second round of the tourney against a team shooting the lights out and lose. They proved themselves all year, but because of one game in March they're done. I mean I know that's the system and that's how it's done, and everyone knows that going in so they should be prepared..but it just seems like their entire season of proving themselves and winning is undone by a single game.

Wichita has beaten a #1 and a #2 seed. They deserve to be there. Even if you cut the tournament down to 16 teams, you still might have Syracuse and Michigan in the Final Four, and they both sucked the last month of the season.

The other thing you're forgetting about is that the tournament may help prove the 30-2 is fraudulent. It did in the case of Gonzaga. Now, Indiana, they had a great record in a great conference, so that is a different story.

I don't think you can compare football and basketball here. In this case, they are entirely different animals. A middle of the road basketball team is much, much more likely to beat Louisville or Duke in basketball than a middle of the road team is to beat Bama in football. The talent gap in those sports isn't the same. College basketball teams are more likely to have similar talent than college football teams are.

How many D1 basketball schools are there? 340+?

I think a 64 (frick 68) team single-elimination tourney works for NCAAB.
