I think a 64 (frick 68) team single-elimination tourney works for NCAAB

I'm not suggesting changing it, because it's fun as hell to watch and is cool.

But just for discussion's sake here..I think the number of teams argument is nullified by the number of games. Sure there's 300 teams, but you also play 30 games. If after 30 games you're only the 68th best team in America, why should you deserve the right to play for a title?

Same with football, you've got roughly 100 teams. You play anywhere from 12-14 games. Taking into account who you played, who you beat, and who you lost to, if in December you're only the 7th or 8th best team, you don't deserve to play for a title.

Well, yeah, but the thing everyone will argue over is who is the 8th best team and who is the 5th best team, etc.

I like the # of teams, simply because it allows for each conference to send a champion, as well as wild cards.

IMO the conference tourneys cheapen the regular season more than the NCAA tourney.

This thread makes its annual appearance

If you are a fan of Goliath Diploma Mill State U, then you like the BCS and hate March Madness

But if you like seeing David beat Goliath once in a while, you love March Madness

Which will be irrelevant since the top 2 are all that matter.

tournament is exciting and fun to watch, but it's a crappy way to determine a champion.

The BCS, for all its faults, is the only system that rewards regular season accomplishment. Again, it sucked for LSU when the Bama rematch happened, but in general, if you make the NCG, you deserve to be there given what you accomplished during the year. There are no Wichita States making the NCG in football and that is a good thing.

WOW!

So you would rather a system which subjectively puts the two "best" teams based SOLELY on the opinion of (cough....cough) non-biased coaches and computer data in the championship game over the process that essentially every other sport uses (i.e. reg season - playoffs-championship)?

Ask Auburn-04', Colorado - 01', Okalahoma St. - '11, Oregon - 01', Utah-05', etc, etc, etc, about how great a job the BCS does in "rewarding regular season accomplishments"

For all of those who say the reg season in basketball doesn't matter, you may have a point when discussing the one-bid leagues, but certainly not when discussing the power conf. For the most part, teams in the power conferences have to perform very well in the reg season in order to get selected to play in the NCAAT (conf. tournament champs notwithstanding). However in CFB, a team could win it's conference, win the conference champ game (on several occasions go undefeated) yet still not have any means of competing for a championship because voters subjectively think another team is better. What a joke!!

For college basketball, I'd be fine with eliminating the conference tournaments and implementing an NCAA tournament that only invites the regular season champions of each of the D-1A conferences. If you think you're an elite team that should be able to play for the NC, then prove it by winning your conference. You maintain the need for big time non-conference matchups during the regular season by still seeding the tournament based on regular season RPI.

There certainly are holes in the BCS, many of which are fixed by expanding the championship process to 4 teams. I am fine with that change provided they never increase it to 8 (unfortunately this is likely inevitable). The 5th team will always bitch, but rarely has the #5 team had any legitimate gripe as to its exclusion. The 4 team BCS based playoff system also is inclusive enough to allow a Boise St to have a shot, while exclusive enough to ensure a Boise St. is not included simply to maintain championship communism.

Ok, and then you have people who will argue over who is supposed to be 1-2. Should it actually the team who is 3rd? This isn't as simple as you are trying to make it out to be.
