WVU still drubbed OU after than and beat the dog shite out of Clemson a few years later. The transition period the first few years in the Big 12 were rough but WVU has been fine.
The OU game had to feel like a consolation prize, and they already had 3 losses when they beat Clemson. The closest thing I can think of for them since that Pitt game was when they went into Lubbock ranked #5 in 2012 and left with a 49-14 loss.
My case for the 2007 Pitt game is this: if WVU beats Pitt, RichRod doesn't take the Michigan job because he wouldn't have left while preparing for a national title game. They would have beaten Ohio State, won a national title, and then I believe they would have won the Terrelle Pryor sweepstakes and RichRod would have had them playing at a powerhouse level for years.
I have always thought that Kirk Herbstreit was right when he reported that Les Miles was going to leave LSU for Michigan. I believe that was all but official on the day of the SECCG against Tennessee. Even though Missouri was ranked #1, they were an underdog to Oklahoma by more than a TD going into the Big 12 title game. The widely held assumption was that WVU and OSU would play for the national title. The monkey wrench in the Miles to Michigan plan that absolutely no one could have predicted was WVU losing to Pitt. When that happened, it opened a spot for LSU in the national title game, and it made Michigan go in a different direction. Coaches don't leave when they're preparing for a national title.

I would have agreed had LSU not pulled off 2019.
Eh 2019 didn’t change the fact that Alabama is clearly the better program currently.
Going into 1/9/12, Miles LSU and Saban Alabama were viewed as equals. Hell, Saban was 2-3 at Bama vs LSU going into that game.

yeah but we’re still talking about 1-9-12. One great year for LSU hasn’t put a dent into the Alabama dominance since then
Perhaps my understanding of program defining loss is a bit different, but LSU has been relatively competitive every year since that and capped off a perfect season, that may be the GOAT within the same decade.
Michigan has literally never come close to what they were nationally since the App State loss.
I do agree that LSU loss to Bama in 12 did set LSU back, but nowhere close to a few of the other programs mentioned.

It’s not about putting a dent on it, it’s about breaking a program
LSU bounced back and won a title, not fade into obscurity

Michigan vs App State
I know this is a LSU site, but on the national level this is the answer.

Besides the fact that WVU would have steamrolled Ohio State for a national title,

Every time I see or hear that date:

Michigan was a very questionable 4th down spot against Ohio State away from a playoff bid in 2016.
The correct answer for Michigan is the 2018 loss to Ohio State when they got beat 62-32 as a road favorite with a playoff bid on the line. 10 years from now, we'll look back at that game the same way we do with Nebraska losing to Colorado in 2001.

West Virginia would have lit Ohio State up like a Christmas tree in 2007. Those slow, stodgy linebackers that were a staple of Tressel's defenses would not have been able to do anything against WVU's read option offense.

28-3 seems like a big one if we can include pros.

Amazing how some don't understand this.

Yea we would have beat them pretty convincingly
We also had a very good D that year

Eh...everyone knew they were way overmatched.
2009 Texas was a damn good team. With McElroy not being able to throw I'm one of the lone Bama fans who thinks we would have been screwed had McCoy played.
