Private Equity firms looking to invest in college athletic departments

According to the WSJ - two PE firms are looking to make a big investment in 5-10 college athletic departments.
Explain to me how this plays out?
I’m skeptical, because PE firms usually ruin things for the sake of squeezing out a profit.

THIS will be the death of college sports. Not NIL, not the transfer portal, nothing.

LSU gets money in to cover NIL costs and TAF pays out based on annual AD earnings.
Get in on it now and sort it out later.

One thing could be that PE firms encourage more “investment” on players that can be monetized, rather than players that are great additions to the team.
But hopefully the ADs tie revenue sharing based on wins and championships rather than social media likes and follows.

They really let the flood gates open up

They've been such a great impact in things like healthcare, what could go wrong?

Jeez this will definitely keep games from being rigged now.

Literally LOL’d at the “quick 50-200m” statement
no such thing as that, finance bros gonna frick up this sport even worse
not to mention Drew Weatherford, aka the guy behind this, is a top member on FSU’s board of trustees, positioning for a P2 conference

The box is wide open to the point that this whole thing falls apart at this point.
This is what happens when no true leadership exists and to many hands are out looking for money.

RedBird has invested in European soccer clubs (Liverpool, AC Milan), the YES Network (Yankees), and the XFL. Though not directly tied to Amazon, many of their entertainment investments were shows or movies that eventually ended up on Amazon Prime.
I don’t know much about Weatherford other than they have invested in IMG Academy.

Considering that venture capital is a subset of private equity, that statement is demonstrably false.

and they waited until the schools have to start paying their labor until investing

First they killed Red Lobster and now they are coming after college sports. Why do they hate me?
Posted on 5/22/24 at 5:36 pm to Yaboylsu63
Just kill it so we can start over again with twink frat boys on the quad. At least they would've gotten in even if they couldn't play football

They should make the universities make pitches like all the cities that begged for Amazon HQ2.
ULM can just send them that picture of the monopoly man with his pockets inside out and the words “plz help”

So they're no different than the TV execs who are ruining the sport.

I two years eveyone will be begging for a players union and collective bargaining agreement, salary cap, draft and full NFL structure to clean up the mess that the "leaders" of CFB made.
It's actually amazing how quickly they annihilated and razed what was the prefect American sport...
