yup 100
and you're literally discussing the NBA with a guy who has never posted in an NBA thread before this controversy
he is here consuming the product bc of the ordeal
speaks volumes

I don't think it's a case of morality police either, unless you identify morality police as calling something that is blatantly wrong just that. In which case, we simply disagree which is fine.

No. Demonstrating our displeasure with such is not dictating to them.

All true, but I don't really recall a situation ever like this one, at least in terms of public attention and backlash that may actually have significant traction.
For example, I didn't see the outcry when Qatar won the site for the 2022 World Cup. Sure a few articles circled about their numerous human rights abuses. But overall people have moved on from that issue.

Toby, there are some ITT trying to say the NBA "should" or "have" to.
Again, the NBA is not going to bite a hand that feeds them globally. Nobody should expect them to.
It was not a NBA issue originally, it was a employee/employer issue that was dealt with. People just did not like how it was dealt with and thought they needed to right a perceived (in their eyes) wrong.
Morey could have left the tweet up and chose not to. So is he not as complicit to the situation as is the NBA?

Does that justify not giving the Qatar matter a harder look? No, but people tend to get more uppity when it's something remotely close/personal to them.

no it indicates you were never a consumer in the first place
so "losing you" literally means nothing to the nbas bottom line
you're just too beyond dumb to realize that most of the people mad about this never cared about the NBA until now.
and you think the "NBA will pay" because of this situation
you're playing yourself. lmao

And so it begins. This situation in HK will likely touch every spectrum of consumer goods before it's over.
Blizzard Sets Off Backlash for Penalizing Hearthstone Gamer in Hong Kong
Blizzard Sets Off Backlash for Penalizing Hearthstone Gamer in Hong Kong
quote:
HONG KONG — Activision Blizzard became the latest American company to find itself caught between its business interests in China and the values of its core customers after it suspended an e-sports player who voiced support for the Hong Kong protests during a live broadcast. The decision to suspend Chung Ng Wai, a professional Hearthstone player in Hong Kong, for a year, while forcing him to forfeit a reported $10,000 in prize money, prompted a backlash in the United States similar to the public relations debacle the N.B.A. has faced this week. Gamers posted angrily on social media and in forums, while politicians saw it as another troubling sign of China’s chilling clampdown on speech worldwide. “Recognize what’s happening here. People who don’t live in #China must either self censor or face dismissal & suspensions,” Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, wrote on Twitter. “China using access to market as leverage to crush free speech globally.” Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, a Democrat, concurred, saying on Twitter that Activision Blizzard showed “it is willing to humiliate itself to please the Chinese Communist Party.”

Qatar got a lot of “WTF?” from people on general principle because it is a outdoor soccer tournament being held in a desert country which reaches 120F at times during the day.
The utter corruption and massive human rights violations being turned up just underscore why the Cup shouldn’t be held there.

Here is my thing..
Hong Kong demonstrations have been going on for months, nobody paid a bit of attention. The Chinese sent in Tanks and troops. The demonstrators took down the airport for hours and days at a time. Good for them. China reacted like they did in Tiananmen, but nobody said anything.
Now a simple tweet has made this blow up, but this has been going on for months. Why is it just now that people on this site are reacting?

Oh I'm under no delusions that the NBA will come out of this much worse for wear, especially once it leaves the main news cycle.
My main issue is with the NBA's hypocrisy. Hopefully their unwillingness and/or inability to take a hard line stance RE: China will give folks pause before allowing them such legitimate sway over other sociopolitical commentary (since the NBA has made themselves about that of late). That's really all I'm wondering will happen.

Because this is a sports message board and it’s the first sports related story to it? Surely you aren’t this dumb

This has been a pretty darn big deal for months now.
This is now just big in basketball circles for obvious reasons, but this is not a new story overall.
