My political fire has been reignited recently, probably heavily due to the HK mess, so I found my arse dragged back on to here. Paying more attention to football again, of course it helps that AU is having a solid season so far.

Belated congrats on the W this season at Jordan-Hare West

listen dude.

ive admitted the NBA took a financial hit here. clearly.

to the lg, as we observed, keeping ALL of China was more valuable than the maintenance of upset, triggered Americans

And you miss my point. China is a lot of money but there is potential to lose FAR more if they screw up their core US and Canadian market.

Lose 10% of the fans and you have lost roughly as much as what China brings in. Lose more than that and you are losing more than what China brings in and endangering your own long term growth.

Kowtowing to China is penny wise and pound foolish.

This situation will only get worse for the NBA. Attempting to keep both sides happy is not going to be possible, and I think Xi Jinping likes soccer better anyway.

Wait, what? What demographic did this issue BRING in? The Chinese have been watching, but because of this issue, not so much anymore. The only thing this issue will do is damage or entirely remove a demographic in viewership. As has been mentioned, China is not known for accepting positions that ride the fence. The NBA will most likely be forced to choose between standing for freedom of speech in the USA, or bowing the knee to China.

Since the NBA does have some business sense, there is only one smart option there.

Before we finally beat you guys at Jordan-Hare last year, I legitimately was wondering if we would just start marking the game in the pre-season as a W/L depending on locale

Same here man. I've played some wild games, mostly in that dynasty, but that one was one of the most memorable.

I feel confident in my prior assessment, but at least at the end of the day I guess I'm 50% right at minimum.

That's a slippery game to play for a number of US companies that are involved with China. I don't think most people are willing to pick up that rock to see what's underneath it.

They may not have a choice with the trajectory we're on with this situation at the moment. I imagine nearly every single company with ties to China have already warned their employees regarding making statements in the wake of the NBA/Blizzard mess, but Idk if their employees will go along with that. Tomorrow may be another company wrapped up in this.

ETA: Blizzard employees aren't even unified (as expected) on this matter, and some have already made a statement at work in some fashion that they do not stand with their employer on this.

Seems to me that Morey was following a pattern of behavior that the NBA had largely encouraged (RE: Speaking up about percieved social injustices)

It is one that companies like Facebook and Google can probably get away with.

Someone like Disney, OTOH, is horribly exposed on a number of fronts because of theme parks, retail stores, TV networks, films, etc.

While he can be cited as the originator of the tweet that technically launched the domino effect, it really comes down to China/NBA (nuance of timing because I'm not sure which occurred first) who came down on Morey to apologize. That is what launched the NBA straight into the forefront on this matter, whereas if they had ignored the matter, it likely does not explode like this and force the NBA into a tricky position.

It is the Streisand Effect in play.

Morey’s tweet received little notice until Fertita lost his shite. China’s response from there just started spinning things out of control.

If people had ignored it, it probably wouldn’t have been a thing at all.

Do you really think a vast amount of people really care what the Chinese do to their citizenry? Americans want cheap goods with some quality. You could go ask 100 random folks on the street today what their stance is and it would be like watching a Waters World gotcha or Kids Say the Darnedest Things episode.

America truly does not care. We are not the world's morality police.

Tilman dealt with this with Morey, it is over. Our values do not coincide with China's or the Communist for the most part. The NBA trying to save a dollar screwed it up.

This is a no win for both sides on this.

The NBA/ESPN have a partnership to broadcast games on China state TV that will net the NBA $1.5B over ten years, not sure how much ESPN’s cut is for but I’m sure it’s significant enough to buy their obedience.

Hell, even The Athletic is punting on this story, and have disabled comments on all NBA/China stories. It’s bizarre.

And this is ultimately why I hope the NBA goes down fricking hard in this
NBA: "We take strong stands for social justice for [insert some minority or whatever social issue present in America]."
Morey: "I support HK."
NBA: "Yeah, about what we said earlier, just ignore all of that."

The NBA isn't going anywhere because of this issue.
