I think this is such a simple problem to solve. Go back to computer rankings. The playoff can be the conference champions and then the next 3 highest computer ranked teams. End of story. Quarters played at highest seed. Remove one regular season game and every conference has to have a championship game.

Why? And follow up question, do you want to see the byes removed from the nfl playoff?

Another week to rest and watch/study the opponent, while the opponent is out there risking injury. The bye week team in college would have a month to study both possible opponents then an additional week once the first round is over to focus on just one, while the other team just has that week.

Yes. I've always thought bye weeks were way too big of an advantage.

This is what I've always posed. To a T. And Notre Dame has to join a conference.

Then have the computer rank the 8 teams 1-8.

I don’t mind bowls. Just eliminate them for the playoff teams.

Money and the media are going to ruin college football

Disagree.

This is good for college football. And some years conferences are really strong, but have no standout, so each team has 2-3 losses and wouldn't otherwise get into the playoff.

Agree.

Anyone who wanted expansion is thrilled.

OSU or OU being left out (in addition to a UGA team who people think is right there as well) was the key to this castle

2014 had TCU/Baylor, this year has OSU/UGA. The B1G wasn't going to be happy with their champ being left out (nor should they be no matter who that team was)

Why can’t they just play the second round games at the higher seed like the NFL does? I don’t know why the bowls are even needed anymore.

As a fan of the SEC, I for one would not want to travel to Ohio State in January to play a football game. I would hate to see my team have better athletes struggle because they are playing a game in 30 degree conditions.

Agreed, I just don't think there is a problem that needs solving here.

That wouldn’t happen with the elimination of the championship games.

we should simply focus on putting the best teams in regardless of conference and have a consistent way of evaluating those teams. we should go back to the BCS polls and just put the top 4, or in this scenario top 8, in the playoffs. i dont like the idea of giving spots to teams just because they were the best team in the conference when the conference was garbage like the pac 12 this year

Three games is asking a lot IMO. Two playoff games was already pushing it. I think you would need to drop a regular season game, which means a ton of lost revenue for teams. And it makes it even harder to make the case that this is an amateur sport.

Most years what are the odds that teams 5-8 would win the championship? I would put it at 10-20%. Is all of that really worth it?

If I am the SEC, Big 10 and ACC I would block this move. It might allow more SEC teams in, but its also going to make injuries more of a factor with an extra game.

I mean it's not like it doesn't get cold in the South.
There was a low of 36 in Columbia Rivalry Weekend. In Clemson a few degrees colder.

Right now it's in the high 30s in Columbia.

If they're truly the best players they should be able to play in any temperature.
Especially the ones that get drafted and play in the NFL.

I'm ok with it...But, imagine if a 5 loss pitt team just happened to upset Clemson...UGH

Exactly. Say Lawrence gets a concussion early in the game and can’t return, and Pitt pulls off the win.

There should be no automatic bids for conference champions or group of 5 teams. It leaves the possibility of completely undeserving, and decidedly not the best, teams making the playoff. With only 8 teams that’s still too big of a risk to take.

it's only an extra game for some of the at large teams if you replace the conference championship games.

This playoff format would be great if we eliminate cupcake games during regular season.

Eliminate a cupcake game and keep the conference championship.

“Go back to the computer rankings” you say.

Guess what bubba, people will start bitching about them too if we go back to them

If we go to an eight team playoff, people will just bitch about the at-large bids and which teams are ranked 9 and 10.
