It's behind a paywall, but this is the new format they are throwing around. Created by Chuck Neinas, would eliminate conference championship games and have quartefinals played instead.

Auto bids for conference champions, highest group of 5, and two wildcards. What it would look like this year:

Why can’t they just play the second round games at the higher seed like the NFL does? I don’t know why the bowls are even needed anymore.

I'm down if we go back to conferences of no more than 10 teams and round-robin scheduling.

Poor washington.

I've been more of a fan of the 6 team idea, top 2 with a bye, but this works as well. The chatter about conference games being meaningless is getting louder, so this will hopefully satisfy everyone.

I don't get the complaint about bowls. Extra football, schools who will never compete for a title at least get the fun of bowl trip, getting a goofy trohpy.

We know which games matter.

i agree. group of five need to do their own thing. power 5 only with 3 at large sounds best to me .

This is almost exactly what I've been posing over the years.

Love the home game for the top 4.

But I think we can do it and keep the conference title games to choose the conference champ. The conferences aren't going to shed teams and play a round robin, so it would be really common to have "co-champs" in conferences. If UGA beat LSU this year, who would've been conference champ?

Also don't think we should automatically choose the highest from Group of 5. Some years that would be a really shitty team.

A bye week is way too big of an advantage IMO.

And home games for the top 4 would alleviate travel/cost issues for fans.

I just meant for the playoff. Greater incentive to do well in the regular season if you can play games on your home campus.

In ten years, the magic from the college football regular season will be gone.

I think it's just a way to assuage the venues who would lose money if they went to a home field playoff format.

Still massively important to get into the top 8 and important for a home game in first round.

If we're talking the 5 conference champs, your conference games are insanely important.

Regular season would be just fine.

Yeah. About that. It already has happened. Sorry you missed it.

This would be needed.

I can't stand the idea of 2(or even 3) teams all finishing with 1 loss in conference while not playing each other, and having Co-champs.

Also, when those 2 teams that don't play each other both finish 11-1, which team gets the auto bid from that conference?

as long as the conference races are close it should still be pretty dramatic. and a round robin with more conference games is a win for the fans .

They all matter, though. Bowls are big money.

I want an 8-team playoff, but I'd also like to keep the bowl games.

*ETA -- P5 conference champions and 3 at-large bids. It isn't complicated.

Why? And follow up question, do you want to see the byes removed from the nfl playoff?

Yea, screw the auto G5 bid. shite will hit the fan when you have to put a team barely in the top 20 in the playoff just because of that.
