Will be top 8. Conference auto bid deal won’t survive a lawsuit. Not all teams are in conferences, and one team isn’t in a conference partly because of its religious habit.

If The Athletic is actually making people pay for a piece that predicts conference auto bids, people are getting duped. It’s dumb.

Power 5 teams in the top 10 don't want to be left out of the playoff because we had to grant a playoff spot to the highest G5 team, even if they're not in the top 20.

Imagine what would happen if a 2 loss, top 10 UGA/LSU/Michigan or a team like that, was left out of the 8 team playoff because Fresno State was the highest ranked G5 team and was ranked 22nd?

Riots.

Auto bids for conference champions, highest group of 5, and two wildcards

so 1 actual at-large selection each year as long as notre dame is reasonably good. frick that.

go back to the traditional bowl system and matchups. play all games on or before Jan 1. pick the 2 best teams on Jan 2 and have them play the championship game 2 weeks later.

The chatter about conference games being meaningless is getting louder, so this will hopefully satisfy everyone.

They wouldn’t be meaningless if they actually had the top 2 teams in each conference play. They’d actually expand the playoffs AND make the CCG awesome.

Get rid of divisions and have more in season conference games.

Go back and read the OP again, slowly.

I'm in favor of the proposal as it is with one exception. Notre Dame HAS to join a conference.

If we go to an eight team playoff, people will just bitch about the at-large bids and which teams are ranked 9 and 10.

Sure, just like people bitch about a team being left out of March Madness.

But the argument is not nearly as strong because their chances of winning the whole thing are dramatically less IMO.

As a fan of the SEC, I for one would not want to travel to Ohio State in January to play a football game. I would hate to see my team have better athletes struggle because they are playing a game in 30 degree conditions.

Tough shite, and it's part of the sport.

Should NFL teams only play post-season in southern venues and domes?

This is some serious pussy mentality. What if the pros acted like this?

Want to host a home playoff game in your climate? Win more.

If we're talking the 5 conference champs, your conference games are insanely important.

This.

If anything having conference champs make it in makes the more games throughout the regular season important.

The next step is for conferences to get rid of divisions and take the two top teams for conference title games because those aren't going anywhere. They make to omuch money. If a conference wants to protect certain rivalries they can go to a pod system.

It works for every other level of football. Why would FBS be different?

The Athletic is absolutely worth their subscription cost. Their coverage is so much better than the crap ESPN farts out its not even funny.

but what about the 9th and 10th ranked teams that get left out. We need to make room for them so everyone gets a trophy

Ok, eliminate conference championship games.

So who goes from the SEC in 2012 when Alabama and Georgia were both 11-1 and didn’t play each other? Or 2009 when Alabama and Florida were both undefeated?

Pac12 tired of getting left out? Then quit losing regular season games.

If they added one game prior to Christmas they wouldn't have to extend out beyond where they are now.

I would love this, but that first time LSU has to play up North in December there will be plenty of bitching.

People will have less of an issue with that than a conference champion being left out.

Gotta have a way to determine conference champions for this to work. No way to eliminate CCG from conferences that don't round robin.
