Hmm interesting as it's come out in court and depositions he reported to superiors. Was he morally right? Probably not, but he did what was required by law.

This is the correct answer and the important point that anyone who is saying the NCAA overstepped its boundaries, the players are punished, the fans are punished or anything else JUST DON'T GET.

The cover up protected the football program from bad publicity at the least that would have likely hurt recruiting and could have potentially resulted in Paterno being forced out. Those factors would likely have reduced the number of wins, which would have further hurt recruiting and so on and so one.

A member institution covered up/ignored/failed to act properly on criminal activity in order to avoid being at a competitive disadvantage. The NCAA was 100 percent within its jurisdiction to punish Penn State and was justified in the punishment it issued.

Because they covered up crimes for fear of losing wins, the right punishment was taking away all wins.

Because they wanted to avoid putting the program at a competitive disadvantage, the correct punishment was to put the program at one.

because Paterno and others didn't want to tarnish his image and wanted to make sure he wound up the winningest coach, the correct punishment was to take those wins away from him so he wasn't.

The NCAA tried to make sure that whatever level of negative impact the punishments had on the players was mitigated.

As for the fans? Well they got to enjoy the fruits of the coverup and the level the program was at. Its their choice if they want to continue to be fans

That is such bull shite. Joe Pa was more powerful than the AD at PSU. To think he had no say in how the situation was handled is naive. Let's just play devils advocate and say he did the right thing and "left it up" to his superiors on how it would be handled. Why in the frick didn't he follow up when he didn't hear of an arrest? It was his program and there is no way the problem was only discovered when the kid was raped in the shower...he knew his DC was a sick bastard long before that incident.

I'm sure many powerful people were in the know.

Cool. SO what does that have to do with the current football program? He's dead. The AD is gone. The rapist is in jail. What reason does the NCAA have to withhold Penn State from offering scholarships to young men to come play football for them? What does that accomplish?

I had no problem with the $60 million penalty. That had a purpose. This scholarship reduction had no purpose other than Mark Emmert being able to say he did something for the mouthbreathers who wanted to nuke Penn State's football program for no damn reason. What's funny is that it is LSU fans who are saying that Penn State deserves to have the death penalty for 5 years because a former coach buttraped kids yet defend the hell out of Jeremy Hill and want no punishment for him or the football program. Way to be consistent.

fricking idiot. Jeremy Hill beat up a woman so should LSU be banned from a bowl this year? Why are you going to push the athletes, students, fans, and their opponents for the actions of a few? It's a criminal case, not a NCAA case. What the frick is taking scholarships away going to do for the kids who were raped? Not a damn thing. Child rape is a horrible thing, but it's not the NCAA's business. They regulate the sports and the business of sports. Criminal cases are none of their damn business.

Are people really this ignorant? They let a child molester continue to use their facilities even after they knew what he was doing. Then tried to cover it up. They are are under grand jury indictment. I think the NCAA had more than enough on them to do what they did.

Comparing JH to this situation just shows your ignorance.

This is the biggest bullshite story of the whole thing. If I know someone is raping children either I am gonna make sure the cops know or I will stop it myself. Not just report to my "supervisors" and hope for the best. Hell Joe was the most powerful man on that campus and has been for 30yrs.

And BTW PSU was one of my favorite teams other than LSU. It shocked and saddened me to see Joe Pa go down like that. I bet we will never know what he truly thought about the whole situation.

in what way are these two situations remotely similar? I'll hang up and listen to your bullshite.

I don't have time to read through the entire thread so I'm sorry if this is repetitive.

What happened at PSU was horrific. It affects people on an emotional level, and rightly so.

But the actions were not directly related to PSU football recruiting or operations. The examples of penalties imposed on other schools and that were not later modified are not necessarily good comparisons. In fact, there were arguments that could have been made at the time (but weren't because of the nature of that monstrous pedophiles actions and public opinion)that the NCAA had far exceeded its jurisdiction and, in fact, its mandate.

PSU has followed virtually all of the reform recommendations of the Freeh report. Everyone involved is gone. The civil courts are taking care of them.

The sanctions were draconian, imo, under the circumstances. A restoration of some of the scholarships and, for that matter, allowing bowl appearances a little earlier doesn't bother me.

We should have given them the death penalty. Was up in State College yesterday and you still see Joe Paterno bullshite around the campus, with the low being a Peachy Paterno ice cream. They haven't learned their lesson on what being a cult-like program can lead to and still worship that cesspool of a human being.

Not going to lie (and it's probably wrong to say it), but I actually think it's pretty damn good . They had a sandusky ice cream, IIRC.

No one at Penn State now has been accused of anything. They all got shafted by NCAA, which overstepped it's bounds. Sanctions should be lifted altogether!

Oh, please. Get a grip.

Yeah, Penn State is the only place in CFB that reveres their football program and famed coaches.

Tear down Alabama! Hell, Saban isn't even dead or gone and they have a phucking statue for him. You don't think the Bear is a cult? He's phucking dead and that shite is still going strong.

The man is dead and they still pray to and dress up like him!

The difference? JoePa outlived Bear and was still coaching.

Tear down Nebraska!

Tear down Notre Dame and the cult of Gipper!

You always post self-righteous nonsense that acts like Penn State was some special circumstance - they are/were no different than tons of small town college football obsessed places.

Because Penn State's commitment to doing things the right way from here on out was the reason cited for NCAA reducing the severity of their sanctions, I think SC ought to get another look. The penalty never fit the crime to begin with, so despite the fact that I am a Pat Haden guy, I feel he needs to press the NCAA for an immediate end to SC's sanctions. The NCAA has always sucked at "fair and balanced" but in light the fact that other programs with more serious transgressions getting off easy, SC is getting hosed.

Also, Mark Emmert looks like Newt Gingrich, but less masculine.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me when the NCAA gained the authority to punish football programs for criminal cases outside of their jurisdiction

Again what did these penalties accomplish? How did they help the victims? I don't care what Joe or the foremost AD and President did. Joe is dead and the other two are out of the program awaiting trial. So what does removing scholarships accomplish exactly?
