Yet he remains 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA That's not a Cy Young season, but it is still an enormous amount of surplus value in the same player.

It is the equivalent of bitching about Derrick Henry suiting up to play linebacker and only being a 2 down player with 75 tackles. That's still a shite-ton of value.

You can’t just give Ohtani the mvp every year because he pitches

And I hope it stays that way.

He could almost quit hitting, and his CF defense alone would make that contract worthwhile.

OK, check the WAR numbers when Ohtani was still pitching then - and get back to me...I'll wait. LOL!!

In the meantime, again....I never said Pete was better than Ohtani. It was said in regard to this topic that not only was PCA not the best player in baseball - that he was not even close. I pushed back on that because it's wrong, he is close. And he's only 24.

I agree, it’s still Ohtani overall. This season? It’s Pete

What on earth could possibly make you say that they’ll regret it? His defense alone is worth that contract

Mostly the fact that they gave him that contract following a portion of a season where he played really well. He was well below average the back half of last year.

Namely, this:

quote:

Post-All-Star Break Statistics (2025)
Games played: 62
Batting average: .216
Hits: 47
Home runs: 6
RBIs: 24
Runs scored: 24

Pete was 23 last year, that ain't happening this year, he's shown an almost unprecedented change in approach and patience that makes what he did early this year sustainable for now an IMHO into the future. And even if he hit league average - his fielding acumen and speed on the bases would make him an above average player would make the contract still a bargain.

However, he is not a league average hitter - he is well above and I think he will be for some time. The Cubs got a good deal, and it's through his prime years.

He's playing well and could have a shot at the NL MVP. Hell of a ball player and fun to watch

No, just every year where he is every bit the equal of the best hitters in the game, *and* an All Star caliber pitcher to boot.
