I imagine they will at least consider changing that so round 2 is on campus as well.

This would be awesome.

From the CFP Working Group on 12-team expansion proposal: The date of implementation of a potential new format was not a part of the working group's proposal. Bill Hancock said the format will not change this year or next year, so the 2023 season appears to be the earliest chance

"Quarterfinals would be played on January 1—or January 2 when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday—and on an adjacent day."

Semifinals and championship game dates are to be determined.

Note that with NFL moving to 17 games, the first two Saturdays in January are now mostly open.

Timed perfectly with Saban's retirement.

The next steps in the process:
- CFP Management Committee must endorse format at meeting June 17-18
- CFP Board of Managers must authorize a feasibility study at June 22 meeting
- CFP Board of Managers would meet again in September to discuss study results

College football got popular on pageantry, tradition, and the importance of the regular season

Taking basically all of those away with the corporate environment, skyrocketing prices, transfer portal, and now this, seems iffy to me

I mean we are moving so close to it simply being minor leagues

As an independent, Notre Dame would not be eligible for a first-round bye. Irish would have to survive four playoff games to win a national championship.

Will 100% change before implementation.

I think You’re underestimating the scale

People are excited to watch top 5 teams play. Especially late in the season and it’s not just because of a winner takes all mentality, but because people like watching good meaningful football.

A late season game what might decide home field advantage or a bye and could be a preview of a championship game?

Yeah that may not be a 100 but it’s still a 90 at least.

People still enjoy big regular season basketball games and they play like 35 of them.

So you would have preferred:

2014 - Alabama vs Oregon
2015 - Alabama vs Clemson
2016 - Clemson vs Alabama
2017 - Clemson vs Oklahoma
2018 - Alabama vs Clemson
2019 - LSU vs Ohio State
2020 - Alabama vs Clemson

12 is clearly about the money.

I agree With you though 5 P5 and 3 at level maybe a threshold for 1 G6 team to auto qualify.

The next round damn well better be on campus too. There’s not a chance in hell I’m going to 4 straight garbage arse neutral site games.

Even in basketball where you only need 15K to fill an arena and no watches until the tournament, lots of tournament games are played in front of pathetic crowds.

I think assuming this happens is flawed. The entire history of the BCS we never saw a repeat title game. The playoff had one by its third year.

Maybe the playoff had no external effects, but I think it’s not a coincidence that we see the “best recruiting class ever” articles every year now. My hope is that adding more teams to the playoff will spread the talent out a bit more.

CFB has never had much parity, but since the advent of the playoff, it’s regressed to the pre-scholarship limit era. Ever power conference except the PAC 12 has become dominated by one team.

I assume this assures Bama a spot every single year.

Not a fan of expanding at all. Especially no more than 6.

Should kill most cupcake games for the big time programs. Administrations want fans in the seats, which has increasingly become a problem in the age of comfort and 4k television. Schools can now schedule big time games without the fear of missing out on the playoff.

I think it’ll do the opposite.

If you have a tough conference schedule already and a tough rivalry game that’s OOC, will have a lot less incentive to go on the road or schedule anything else but cupcakes to pad the schedule. When the committee is looking @ a cluster of 2 loss teams for the last few spots, they’re not gonna give a second thought to a 9-3 team, even if they played a tougher schedule, unless you have the blue blood name recognition for your program.
