Some notes from Canales' presser:

quote:

"I watched the film, started talking with a lot of parties, my #1 responsibility is to help the Panthers win."

quote:

On how did the discussions go with the number one pick and what this does to his confidence:

"Making the best decision for the team. I stood in front of the team and challenged all the team. Rough decision, but I watched the film.

quote:

Bryce will be #2. Will not bring in another QB right now.

quote:

On is it better for Bryce to sit back, watch learn?

"I hope he shows up and works hard." Not gonna get into a timeline for possible return.

quote:

In announcing the benching of Bryce Young, Panthers coach Dave Canales says, "We feel like Andy [Dalton] gives us our best chance going forward." Asked about front office/ownership input, Canales adds, "This is my decision."

What i said in the other thread:

quote:

As bad as he's been, it's still kind of wild that they're benching him.

You just traded the farm for him just a year ago and Andy Dalton has absolutely nothing to do with the franchise going forward, you know what you have in Andy Dalton. Young is still very young and could still possibly turn a corner (I don't think he will).

If I'm a Panthers fan, I would 100% want Young out there struggling trying to learn and possibly get better over still losing but looking slightly more competent because Andy Dalton is out there.

Option #1, Start Andy Dalton: You lose and learn nothing.
Option #2, Start Bryce Young: You lose and at least learn if there is anything there with this guy.

Makes no sense going with Dalton.

Bryce has to have a 49ers type offense to be successful... him and Kyler Murphy about to same size height wise... Kyler has a much better arm though

Aka Tepper called up and said he would choke me out if I didn't change the QB

I know what you mean but there's 52 players on the gameday roster other than Young. These guys aren't robots and are playing for their careers too - they didn't sign up for a tank season and it's not fair to them as a coach not to give your team the best chance to win. They have 15 more games to play, it's not like it's Week 17 and players have mentally checked out.

You can't just submarine the entire locker room to shoehorn Young's development that they have already determined isn't worth pursuing.

Additionally, you have to see the development of other players too. You want to see guys like Xavier Legette grow, Bryce completing nothing but 1 yard passes doesn't help that.

Yep. You can be skinny like JD5, you can even be kind of fat, but you sure in the frick can't be short.

You can be short with some other attributes (Brees, Kyler, etc)

You can't be a combination of: short, skinny, slow, and mediocre arm talent.

I get it. I don't doubt that the head coach is making the right call and that Dalton gives them a better chance to win right now. Just was trying to think if I were a Carolina fan which one would I want. Yanking him after two games is a tough call. I think I'd rather go ahead and get the pain over with instead of having him sit another year then next year be like "Ok he's sat and leaned now he's ready" and then it just be another epic fail/waste of a season.

I would probably be out on Young already too if I was a fan - would be different if he had measurables maybe, but 5 foot 9 and they clearly aren’t seeing enough in their building to believe he can play this year or beyond.

It must just suck complete balls being a Panthers fan right now. You wait all offseason getting hyped and now 2 weeks in and the season is over and Tepper still owns the team, so short and long term prognosis is already fvcked.

He might start again this season since Dalton could get hurt but he would need MASSIVE strides, like Love did beginning to end of last season, to convince them to bring him back to start next year. But Love never looked as bad as Bryce has even in the beginning.

We all remember where we were when we first saw Andy Dalton's glorious fade. Best hair in the NFL these last ~ 8 years.

Immediately changed him from "lol ginger twat" to "whoa, this guy fricks".

This just accelerates a BY resurgence in SF with Shanahan at some point in the near future

I heard a sound bite from Bryce after week 1 and he sounded like a nervous 14 year old (including voice tone).

He just needs to put his head down and grow from the experience like Baker or Sam Darnold. Or go the hookers & blow route like Johnny.

I wasn’t a huge believer in Bryce Young but he’s shockingly bad.

I’m a huge believer that some years as a backup maturing and a better situation can rehab a lot of these QBs who disappoint into something that’s at least serviceable but I’m not sure that’s the case here

Bryce is shite. There’s a reason our offense was so anemic his last season.
