Padres got screwed

WTF - Ty France hits a monster shot that should have allowed the padres to take the lead, likely win the game.
These commentators acting like it’s no big deal is ridiculous. This is crazy.
I’m a braves fan so no dog in the fight, but I’d be livid if I were a padres fan.

Ground rules state that if it hits the roof and lands in fair territory, it’s a fair ball.

Younger me would’ve broken something. That is a no doubt home run that gives your team the lead and it turns into an out. In the Braves game day thread I mentioned how I would rather get blown out because the loss is easier to take. Losing like the Padres did tonight is brutal for them. Additionally, they were 1-9 with RISP. They blew what opportunities they had and then were fricked over by a God awful rule. Yeesh.

Didn’t watch the game, but that’s crazy that that happened to them twice in the same season. Xander Bogaerts hit a ball in Tampa that hit a railing and got caught that would have definitely been a home run.
After checking the Statcast numbers on the ball, it was never going to be a home run

It wasn’t though.
Rules are rules but that rule needs to go. If the Padres lose this series in 5 that play will be the one that likely cost them. That’s a tough way to go out.

Do they not have trackman software that can calculate the velocity and trajectory to determine if it would be a homer?

It’s a tough break but they didn’t get screwed. It’s one of the ground rules for that particular park. Managers and umpires go over all of them before the game starts.

That's one of many reasons why you don't play baseball in a fricking dome

Exactly
But something like this can be avoided. New rule, if a ball hits the roof it is automatically dead and the game continues. A ball isn't given a strike isn't given, game continues as if it never happened. That is the only way to fairly treat that situation. IMO that is a fair way to treat it because that situation happens so rarely.

That was crazy, but I guess that is the rule.

It would not have been a homer based on statcast
quote:
At an uninterrupted physics projection of ~379 feet, the ball's extremely steep, near-vertical descent means it would have dropped directly onto the warning track, just short of clearing the 8-foot wall in left-center field

Don’t need it. Did the ball go over the fence or not?

YORDAN hit one like that at Daiken early in the season and it ended up costing him the AL HR title.

Same rules in Minute Maid. To say they were screwed, is to say a rule or something was applied wrong, which wasn’t the case in this situation.

So you think it should have been called a homerun?

Everyone knows the rules, Managers and Umps have a ground rules meeting, just for this type of shite.
ALL roofs are in play.
JUst unlucky, but a fly ball out, could hit roof, fall in and team could score the winning run, on a would be fly out. Works both ways.
