It's not that it's NOT a big deal, it should be, it's an unfair competitive advantage if everyone can only pay 10 mill per player, but you find a way to offer them 20 mill (numbers are just an example), I just personally feel that shite like that probably happens ALL the time and they were just excessively sloppy with covering it up

I didn't say they shouldn't get punished. I said i don't care what they did.
It's against the rules. They were lazy and sloppy. Suffer the consequences. But I still don't care it happened, and it's not a big deal. Just punish them and get it over with so the trade can happen and both teams and players can move on.

I think part of the problem is Silver trying to find an acceptable punishment Balmer and Kawhi will accept without further litigation or involvement from the NBAPA.

Use the Joe Smith precedent from the Timberwolves circumvention case… invalidate Kawhi’s contract, fine the team, suspend the owner and GM for at least one season, and strip 3-5 firsts.

Ballmer must sell the team. If not, the league admits it’s better to cheat by circumventing the salary cap than to take issue with your gf showing up to your games with her side pieces.

I'd say I'm significantly more than a casual NBA fan and I could not care less about this. Hopefully it goes away so he shuts up about it. The Malik Beasley thing he did was more interesting but nobody cares about Malik Beasley.

What I don’t understand is, how is it not salary cap circumvention every time an NBA player chooses to play in LA or NYC because of the “market size” and “off court money”? Are we to assume that the LA and NYC teams have nothing to do with setting the players up with these off court dealings?
It’s an NIL deal, but only an NIL deal if you choose to play for X team, isn’t that essentially the definition of salary cap circumvention?

Absolutely. If this is widespread and everybody inside the NBA knows about it, if Silver is too punitive, he risks Balmer exposing it and telling everybody where the bodies are buried. Which could be devastating for the league.
But being too lenient and poo-poo-ing it, not addressing it like they are now, is almost an admission by the league that it IS widespread.

Agreed. As far as the NBA is concerned, it matters (and should) a lot. You can not have owners/front office execs orchestrating back-alley deals to circumvent the set compensation structure by the league to lure the best talent to their teams

I don't understand how you can't find this interesting when he's now found that the Rhode Island governor Dan McKee is connected to this as well. McKee is now flailing around trying to distance himself from ever knowing Kawhi was a part owner of a RI soccer team that he helped get tax dollars for a stadium deal even though he went to a Clippers game to discuss it w/the other owner. He's in the middle of a tight primary race and does not need a corruption scandal exploding in his face b/c he's currently down to his challenger.
