The NBA only allows teams to pay players a maximum amount. They (the clippers) started a bullshite tree business and paid him through that business to bypass the restriction. That's the gist of it. In the grand scheme of life, it matters very little. I highly doubt this is unique either, this is just the guy that this journalist went after and exposed

No one cared that college players were getting paid under the table. Why would anyone care if an nba millionaire is getting paid even more money under the table. And yes i get that it's against the rules, but i don't care at all. This happens all the time, the difference here is the Clippers and Kawhi were very sloppy and careless about it, kind of like how Will Wade was sloppy and careless about it when he was caught. Who cares. As if Jalen Brunson isn't getting money funneled to him in some way for being nice and taking less than his max on his contract.

The way I understand it he could have just been given a sponsorship or paid for marketing by a legit company for whatever amount, the issue is he never did any of the marketing and shite that he was "paid for" and I guess that raises concerns about opportunities for money laundering and shite (from a legality perspective) but I'm sure shite like this happens all across the US multiple times a day.
