But someone told me we should keep the playoff at 4 teams "because the regular season matters."

Yeah if it mattered less, there'd be less downside to scheduling big OOC games, like in college basketball

This has been true for a while. LSU scheduling Oregon at Jerry World in 2011 cost them a national championship. They would have played Oregon in the Superdome for the title instead.

If they didn’t lose to Auburn they’d be fighting for a shot at the playoffs.

If not for the AU loss they would be an absolute lock after tonight

All Oregon proved is: they weren't scared of real OOC games. Your assessment is not wrong about the committee fricking them over; but lets remember to piss on the folks truly at fault: the committee, not Oregon or Texas.

Or maybe by playing a high profile neutral site OOC game, Oregon is better prepared for this stage than Utah?

If Oregon had beaten Auburn then they'd be in over Oklahoma/Baylor without question. If they scheduled some also-ran instead they'd still be competing with OU/Baylor.

A good OOC win goes a long way and can often grant you a higher spot in the pecking order if you lose a game. So I dont really buy the "there's no benefit" argument.

If the team you play goes in the shitter later in the season then yeah that's tough but thems the breaks. Although I will say Ohio State lost to a VT team that looked listless most of the season after that game and still got in over TCU/Baylor so I dont think it hurts you as much as people say

And Baylor just needs to win tomorrow to get in despite the worst OOC of them all

If LSU had scheduled tougher OOC's, they'd be #1 right now.

The Texas games means 0 for LSU.

It's the reason why they're #2 and not #3.

The Northwestern State game means a lot right now.

It’s not the Auburn loss that’ll keep them out... it’s losing to ASU.

Exactly. Why do people dismiss the bad in-conference loss?

But had they won, there would be no question.

But had they played a cupcake and won, they'd be #4 in the CFP rankings.

Them beating Auburn or beating a cupcake this year would have made zero difference.

A 1 loss Oregon that beat the committee's #5 team is getting into the playoff.

Because a 1 loss Oregon, after this win, gets the #4 seed.

A win vs Auburn literally does nothing for them. The loss keeps them out of the playoff however.

A win there gives you a ton of cred in a pool of one loss teams

In theory yes, but not sure it would

Is Arizona State Oregon's only loss?

Herm Edwards ended their playoff chances, not Auburn.

That's the entire point

If Oregon had played a cupcake, they'd be the #4 seed in the final CFP standings.

The Auburn game could 100% only hurt them, which it did.
