Good because they already do that

This is all true, but divisional rivalry games really add luster to the NFL schedule. I think the league would suffer without them.

Even when both teams have losing records, Saints-Falcons will always mean more than a random matchup like Saints-Browns or Saints-Titans, etc.

I think 4 8-team divisions would be more exciting than the 8 4-team divisions we have now.

The idiots who just scream well you should’ve won your division are completely void of rational thought. In no world should a team who goes 12/5 or 13/4 have to travel to an 8/9 or 9/8 team from a shitty division.

If they’re legit theyll win that game anyways

Why not?

We've long been down the path in sports mentality of Divisions, Conference championships in CFB don't matter (see Alabama for a decade) , etc.

Divisions used to be for travel, now schedules are wonky, he'll division games are only 35% of a team's schedule.

If sports are gonna create and advertise divisions, Conference Champions, etc. as important and then treat them as a novelty on paper with little respect.... Why not just ignore the Division champs altogether like this proposal? If Divisions only purpose is to navigate disparate schedules?

Am I smoking crack? I could have sworn the NFL already reseeds
They reseed the bracket based on who wins first round playoff games. But current a 9-8 division champ would be seeded higher than an 11-6 wild card since division champs are locked into the top 4 seeds. The new proposal would only guarantee a division champ a spot in the playoffs, but they wouldnt be guaranteed a top 4 seed anymore

Even in LHSAA winning district doesn’t really help you in the playoffs like it used to. There are really people who want to do away with districts, not understanding that those district championships are important because not every team can win state

My counter to the Lions' proposal is a 31-game season. Each plays each other team once. Alternating home vs. away each year.

Top 16 teams make the playoffs. No byes.

Sack up, boys. This is gonna hurt.

Yea the one bye is stupid.

I think the current format gives the #1 seed too much advantage. A bye plus home field over the #2 seed is a bit much, IMO.

Detroit’s proposal would be for the four division champions and three wild cards in each conference to make the playoffs. Those seven teams would then be seeded strictly by record, rather than assigning the top seeds to the division winners (which is how it’s been done since the merger), with the wild cards to follow. If teams have the same record, being a division champion would be the first tiebreaker—regardless of head-to-head record.

Love this

quote:

A change in Detroit’s proposal from March is for the teams then to be reseeded after the first round. So, in this case, the No. 1 seed would play the lowest-remaining seed in the conference, rather than automatically facing the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup, with the other two remaining teams playing in the other divisional round game.

Isn’t this already how it goes in the NFL?

The Lions as a franchise have no business toying with the playoff format. Detroit played in back to back years and all of a sudden, they're some sort of experts. Its fine the way it is.

Win your division.
