Akili Smith is a bust.

I think he was arguably the biggest QB bust in NFL history given he was the 3rd pick overall, only played in 22 games with a total of 2,212 yards with 5 TD's, 13 INT's and a passer rating of 52.8.

I remember seeing someone from Miami (FL) years ago that was one of the most ripped dudes I've ever seen in my life. Can't think of his name but it was probably 10 years ago

I think that's true for SOME, as I mentioned in the OP. However, I don't you would say that an organization like NE uses this approach.

NE uses that approach more than anybody. That's why they stockpile draft picks. They know that 75% of them won't work out.

I personally think that the physical portion of the combine as to predicting the success of a player is way overrated

I would imagine it still has the highest correlation with success. It's not perfectly correlated but no other attribute is either.

Curry was a pretty productive college player though

To me a workout warrior is one that has the physical intangibles but didn't have much production in college but teams ignore it after they wow them at the combine.

Malachi Dupre will be a workout warrior candidate if he comes out

Was given other chances, whereas Smith was told to just leave. Smith, Klingler, Ware, and Dan McGwire were all bigger busts than Leaf IMO. Leaf was just an explosion that the media helped fuel after the locker room incident.

If Leaf goes to anywhere but San Diego Cincinnati, or Dallas I think he would have been fine.

Bengals drafted LB/DE Dontay Moch in the 3rd after he ran a 4.44 at the combine.

He was the guy at Nevada that scouts hand timed at 4.18, then 4.08, and 4.20 the 3rd time while he was still in college at 245 pounds.

Problem was, that's all he was. Stiff as a board, speed was all he had...

He has an absolute freakish arm, but other than that, is no freak.

And he was a good football player, he's just a lazy motherfricker

Still pissed he went to the Raiders with Kiffin. Absolute worst case scenario. He needed a baby sitter coach/GM/owner and got the opposite.

Well, I did say arguably. But, at least other teams gave Ryan Leaf opportunities to play and start. Smith was released from a couple of other NFL teams (after the Bengals) in training camp without playing a down for them in the regular season. That alone tells you they knew he was done.

Someone on this board once told me that Bill Bilicheck purposely picks second round busts every few years to throw other teams off

I'm not an NFL GM or scout, but the combine strikes me as being the biggest waste of time. To me, what matters is how a guy plays on the field. I would be more interested in seeing how he did in big games and when he was facing off against other guys who are NFL players. How fast he can run on open flat turf in shorts and a T-shirt means nothing.
