all schools have the same age limit

They do but lots of kids graduate at 17 and then grow more after that. I graduated at 17 and was about 5'10" and 170, by the time I started college I was 6' and closer to 195. My son was the same way but he was held back in elementary because of dyslexia issues. Made a big difference for him both academically and athletically, he hit a spurt right before his junior year and got much taller and faster.

Didn't that make a rule about holding kids back after 8th grade they lose a year of eligibility?

Based on the overall state of our public education, yes. One is ignorant to disagree.

So you lump every public school together even though there are many that outperform the privates. The privates have a bunch that are pretty poor academically too.

I know, it's crazy. Louisiana is just a sports state tho. People all across the state care about sports on a different level than I grew up with in Virginia. Of course you had your travel sports parents there but here it seems like that bleeds much more into the general culture.

i coached in VA.... and two names come to mind quickly... Dre Bly and Terry Kirby...... Dre demolished an 8th grade team I coached all by himself..... That area around hampton roads produces some significant football players....

one could never hold back after 8th grade but 8th grade hold backs were rampant as much as 85 % of athletes at a handful of perennial powers..... so it was pushed back to 6th.. but there are loopholes and even doctor's excuses can get a kid a waiver if his parents know how to navigate it.. .so that rule will likely return to the 8th grade... soon. because the ones that really want to wiggle around it are.. and some kids that just face odd circumstances are getting screwed by the rule.

you won't get it..... that's why the smaller privates that do not have their own stadiums could not walk away and form their own gig...

Honestly, LA highschool football has such a rich history. Some rivalries have faded, some have stayed, some have come along but all-in-all there's only a few states (if any) than can compete with the Louisiana high school football.

Here's a thread from about a year ago that would be good to check out

For a long time Hahnville's biggest rival was Central Lafourche. Destrehan was not in the district and was in a classification lower than HHS until the late 80's I believe. When I was in school (70's) we didn't have the bridge so to play each other we had to cross the ferry. We'd play non-district but it wasn't the rivalry it is today.

yes... but it's wrong to hold back a kid for athletic gain....the rule just like a law doesn't make it right or ethical
but the rule is what every principal and every coach decide to play under. It gives a kid one year of leeway should he start school at the normal age in case of medical issues, or just being a kid early on and not being ready for the next grade

yeah.. but those aren't the kids I am referring to.. when 3/4 of a team is a year older than their opponent that is BS....

EJ and Bonnabel is still a nice rivalry even though one or the other usually sucks

WM and Neville did play this past season

I know

This guy like many in the media keep driving this narrative that public schools cannot survive without private schools, when it reality it is the other way around.

If suddenly the LHSAA said all public school couldn't play private schools in any sport many small privates would cease to play sports. Because of travel distances among other reasons. It wouldn't be long before your big private schools in New Orleans and Baton Rouge would be impacted big time. Because eventually they would start losing big time athletes that go there just to be seen. These kids would return to the local public schools.

The big privates could and would support the smaller privates

The big publics absolutely could not support the smaller public schools.

Go to a small private school, you will see program support for tennis, golf, tiddly winks and more

Go to a small public school that isnt one of the few that have a football following, and you will see baseball played on an overgrown cow pasture, no tennis team, and a golf team who is coached by the Math teacher names Mrs. Jones and their averages score is +110 over par

I have 100% confidence a fully public run system in louisiana will fail. I would bet my life on it

Forgot about that one. When Catholic joined the 5-5A district, I thought Catholic-Dutchtown could have a really good rivalry. It was pretty good from 2011-2015 but has fallen off these past two years as Dutchtown has fallen off. Amazing how a program can fall as quickly as Dutchtown has when you quit recruiting and quit getting that NOLA talent.

Thomas Dale High School in Chester, VA has 2100 students and is 6A. By comparison West Monroe has about 2300 students and is 5A
