In a letter sent to Division I members, and obtained by Yahoo Sports, Baker outlines a groundbreaking and radical change to the NCAA Division I athletics model, describing it as a “new forward-looking framework.”

According to Baker’s proposal, schools that choose to be part of the new subdivision — they can opt in or out — are required to meet a strict minimum standard rooted in athlete investment.

Members of the new subdivision will be permitted to strike name, image and likeness (NIL) deals with their own athletes — a significant move away from the current NIL structure.

This sounds like a logistical nightmare. You bring all sorts of Title IX issues into play on the NIL side here now that didn't exist before. Also, who and how do you decide which female athletes get paid and which don't?

Going to be some lawyers buying new boats

Agreed.

That’s why I think this becomes a football only thing. Eventually the power conferences will separate from the NCAA and form their own football league. The players will effectively become “employees” so they can collectively bargain with the new league.

The mindset that college football is a “scholastic extracurricular” should have been extinguished LONG ago once the conferences started signing multi-million dollar media rights deals (just like professional leagues). It’s now an entertainment business somewhat affiliated with schools. That should be the mindset. It will help those who long for college football of 40-50 years ago understand what is going on

LSU will be completely screwed in this model.

They already are to a certain degree. There needs to be restrictions on this and they are going the other way.

Schools with massive donors and trusts will start to completely dominate within 5 years.

The "reputation" schools like LSU will fade.

They will not be able to compete with the Texas and Michigans etc's of the world.

Not really. Jayden just made himself 10s of millions of dollars more than any NIL deal would have paid by coming here and balling out.

Players will take notice of that.

Electing in means Title IX will not apply

It 100% applies to any salaries paid by the school and now potentially NIL that the school does directly. It's federal law.

For awhile.

But that too soon will fade.

The vast majority of players will realize how much money they can make and it will just be open Free Agency. The best HS and Transfer players will take the most money, and LSU will not be able to compete across the board, from roster top to bottom.

Only about 4-5 programs nationwide could sustain this. And some of those might not even want to. When the other schools figure it out and quit trying to compete on an uneven playing field, it will be the end of college sports.

Or better yet, maybe it will go back to unpaid college students that play sports, instead of paid athletes that play school.

You think it'll be the last time we get a transfer that come here and crushes it, making a bunch of money in the process?

We'll see. I'd bet LSU remains a power.

No, definitely not.

I am simply talking from top of roster to bottom, LSU will not be able to compete under an unlimited free agency no salary cap model

Louisiana and LSU Alumni simply do not have the money other schools will have

It will depend on what you mean by Power. Reputation and lack of in state comp will keep them somewhat in the hunt in perpetuity, I agree. They just will not year in year out be on the level of other schools, eventually.

But LSU simply would not benefit from this model like other schools.

LSU Fans should be hoping for sane restrictions

How many schools can and will make the choice to spend unlimited amounts of money? The answer is almost none at best.

Again, who is going to be willing to spend unlimited amounts of money? These same arguments were made when NIL was instituted.

At this point you take the top 50 or so teams... the big names, you create a league, you implement a standard pay model where everyone makes the same. Make the players sign exclusive contracts that keep them from getting money from other sources..

You pay all Freshman 50k a year, redshirt freshman and true sophmores 100k, redshirt sophomores, Juniors, and seniors 200k.

The money doesn't come from the school, it comes from the collective money coffers of the new league.

Players then choose where they want to go based on roster availability, play time, coaches, etc...
