It makes no sense. Why would he suspend him a year and a half. Why not 1 year or 2 years. If you believe this you should believe in Santa Claus.

I know what a lowlife Stern is, I know Jordan is a degenerate gambler. 2+2. It wasn't 2 years because Stern needed Jordan back, ratings were sagging. Stern cares infinitely more about money than integrity.

May not be true, I just think that this is closer to the truth than the retirement of a driven competitor

the temporal elements of the suspension may not have mattered. ASSUMING this was true, stern couldn't know when jordan would get his shite together, so i doubt there would be a timeline. it would be more like, "when you get your shite together, we can talk"

follow up: ASSUMING it's true, could something like this ever happen again? i don't think so

It could happen again because other players have been suspended for drug use. The cover up can't happen again because of social media.

There is no evidence this happen. The story does not make sense at all. No reasonable grownup in his right mind would believe this. Everyone just says they believe it because they don't trust Stern. Somebody would have leaked this if it happen. I have never seen one real reason to believe this BS story.

I always thought the jordan gambling ordeal and stern fixing the lottery was an obvious yes.

I thought this was common knowledge?

I don't think he was suspended for gambling. It wouldn't surprise me if it was true, but I honestly don't think so. I tend to think he just conquered everything in the world of basketball and kinda got bored with it.

The only thing that makes me question my stance, and it actually goes both ways, is that Jordan was always the ultimate competitor. So part of me thinks that he wouldn't have just left basketball because he would've wanted to horde as many rings as he could. However, the other part of that is that he was such a competitor (and arrogant?) that he thought he could just waltz into another pro sport and be good at that too (a la other people like Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson).

is there a solid place to read up on the theories being discussed in this thread? just behind the scenes type shite that is somewhere on the internet?

as for the thread, i dont think so. but for fun, i always tell people that's why he didn't play and they seem to have never heard of it even being an idea before.

Simmons always hints at the possibility Jordan was suspended for betting on his own games, much like he hints at George Gervin and Dr. J doing massive amounts of blow in the 1970s. And there's the blind item about how a current multiple time NBA All-Star enjoys cross-dressing with his wife (people think it's Chris Bosh).

Outside of Gervin, I don't really buy into any of that stuff. Jordan is and always has been a Grade-A scumbag, far worse than anything Kobe or especially LeBron have ever been. He is the most fortunate man in the world to be born in 1963 and not 1983. But the gambling/suspension narrative doesn't add up for me.

quote:

The "Frozen Envelope Theory" suggests that the NBA rigged the 1985 NBA Draft Lottery so Georgetown University standout Patrick Ewing would land with the New York Knicks, who had the first pick in that year's draft. Conspiracy theorists argue that the New York Knicks' envelope was placed in the freezer so that when NBA commissioner David Stern reached into a bowl containing the envelopes of all the teams participating in the draft lottery, he would be able to identify the Knicks’ envelope by its being colder than the others.[78]

If so, then he would never suspend Jordan. No chance.

Obvious yes when no evidence has ever been presented in 15+ years?

He did not suspend him for gambling...he suspended him for not paying his gambling debts and getting his Daddy killed.
