I think so but all of my friends think I'm absolutely insane for thinking it.

No way we'll ever know for sure, but it sure seemed like it. Another question: did stern fix the lottery so the knicks could get Ewing?
FTR, Stern is an egomaniac, has a hard east coast bias, and is one of the worst commissioners in sports.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he was. I think an argument can be made either way though.

follow up: ASSUMING it's true, could something like this ever happen again? i don't think so

I've never bought it. If the Jordan image is so precious that the NBA would cover up his suspension, why not just let him play?

should be the other way around
and the answer is no, there is no way that they could keep that secret, it makes no sense anyway, he wasn't betting on basketball, why would the league that always markets stars, suspend the biggest one ever because he played blackjack and bet on golf.

The older you get and the more you learn the type of men Jordan and Stern are, this seems more and more likely

I used to think this was ridiculous, but after I learned about sketchy NBA stuff like Worldwide Wes and Tim Donaghy, it made it seem much less ridiculous.

No, they had a 1 in 7 chance, just like everyone else.
Why would they fix that lottery and not the one that would have sent Tim Duncan to the Celtics?

how many members of the jordan family would die before people started getting curious?

Stern's most notorious "meddlings"
1. Rigged Lottery
2. Jordan Suspension
3. 02 West Conf Finals Game 6 (note, and other games altered by Dick Bavetta)

fair enough, the only reason I asked is because it's become one of those famous conspiracy theories along w/ the jordan gambling thing.

i don't believe they fixed the lottey
the jordan-gambling thing is something much more complicated

I doubt it. Why would his suspension have ended in the middle of a season? And if he was suspended for a year and a half, why would he have pissed the league off like he did by wearing #45 when he came back? IIRC, he was fined for every game he wore that number. Seems like he wouldn't want to ruffle feathers like that if he was coming back from suspension.
