When I was a grad student I used the phrase “retarded” and my boss pulled me aside and told me my colleague had a special needs brother and it throughly pissed him off.
Haven’t used the phrase to this day. I don’t judge others that do, but I removed it from my vocabulary in the derogatory sense.

I have a really good friend with an 4 year autistic son and he told me he hates the word because it makes him sad for his son. So I personally don't use it. I was a serial user for decades.
But sensitivity training is straight up meaningless virtue signaling by Nascar.
