My nostalgia for Larry Bird- Magic Johnson era NBA basketball has reached absurd levels

Obsessed.
Damn , I can’t watch enough YouTube of 1980s- 1990s basketball. That includes the emergence of the Pistons and the Bulls and the Rockets and all the great teams and players of that era.
And yet, the current NBA , with all these great players and teams leaves me cold. I’m the opposite about the NFL where it’s hard to watch the old NFL and it looks like an inferior product.
Anyhow, the point is I’m not attached to an era, but definitely attached to sports styles and players in certain eras. And 80s - 90s Lakers Celtic Pistons Bulls NBA Dream team era was the shite.

Magic and bird rentergized the NBA to a level not seen before or since. MJ kept it at that level when he came into league. This new generation has no clue how important what magic and bird did.

Most people feel the opposite way, that the old NFL was superior and the old NBA was hard to watch

Don't like passing, better shooting, and more adaptable defense?
Especially when you get into the 90s. It gets real gross. Pretty much all isolation offense and very unimaginative motion, passing, etc. The '80s did try to run fast break and ignore defense so there is some aesthetic value to that era. After the Pistons, this was eliminated and basketball got really gross really quickly.

Do you remember how exciting the eastern conference finals for instance on CBS were in those days ? Truly can’t miss television. And we thought it would just stay that way. We were wrong.
Not minimizing the talents of this generation just wishing we had that perfect era back a bit.

I heard this song on the radio yesterday and it made me think of this era.
This was the first time I really had my heart ripped out with respect to sports.

Those Detroit teams were great television- the ultimate bad boy archetype. Larry fricking Bird.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug

It’s nice to be in an era where a sport is peaking. Like the MLB of the 40s and 50s must have been awesome. Thats how I feel about the NBA 1980s-1990s. It was so compelling. The NFL is the only league imho that maintains across the decades although having watched old NFL replays it was pretty bad throughout the 70s and into the 80s by comparison.

Your ignorance when it comes to the NBA always makes me chuckle.

90s basketball outside of MJ is a tough watch.

when you heard the NBA on NBC theme and it was Bulls vs Knicks, you know you're in for a treat.

Modern fans have accepted this lie that all the previous eras were slow paced, half court slog fest but that isn’t true. You had more diversity of style back then but you did have teams playing at the same pace and sometimes faster pace than today’s top paced teams. For example the 1990 nuggets played at a higher pace than any team does today by a wide margin.

Those Doug Moe teams were really fun to watch. I'm not sure they even ran any plays, just kept moving and cutting.

The finals meant way more back then and they had real rivalries… todays players are soft and rekey on the buddy system…

Celtics-Sixers were even money for a fight, or at least a shoving match.
And Portland-Seattle had some low-key hate.

And they were an outlier and that all stopped shortly thereafter.
The 90s were gross and got worse as the decade went on. The late 90s/early 00s almost killed the NBA, it was so bad.

Please stop. You are becoming an embarrassment…..

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he didn’t watch back then and refuses to honestly compare data so he just repeats the same false narrative over and over. I mean it’s fine if you didn’t witness or were too young to see that era but what he does is invents a reality that never existed just to support his bias which is counterproductive in these discussions.

Slo is around 40, I think. So, yeah, he was locked into that 80s basketball.
