Partial zones, doubling/helping guys without the ball, circling the post, dig out/in post, etc.
All things that would be illegal under the 90s rules
Just catching up, is someone arguing against this?
Will add the rise of video games skews this debate. I remember the transition from Dr. J vs. Bird to Jordan vs. Bird to Double Dribble, to NBA Jam, to the OG King BB Game, NBA Live. Getting to play with my hero's as a kid will always color my view of 80s and 90s NBA.
Looking back I can admit the game and players today are way better and more skilled. And NBA Live wasn't very true to actual gameplay, in fact I would argue video game play strategy was closer to current NBA strategies than 90s strategies.

Magic Johnson will always be my favorite basketball player of all time. I couldn't stand Bird and the Celtics. As I've gotten older I really appreciate the way Bird played and love watching his highlights. Then the Nasty Boys came around and were so physical. Oh and some guy named Mike. Now I don't want the NBA at all.

Nelson was an outlier because of the weird lineups he three on the court to creat mismatches. He would play multiple centers or three point guards at the same time Nellie ball was about having your best players on the court regardless of position. You wouldn’t have many other teams with Paul Pressey or a Tim Tolbert bringing the ball up the court

What’s crazy to me is if you practically apply his logic it’s as if he believes all of the sudden Steve Kerr discovered up tempo basketball like a caveman discovering fire instead of reality where todays coaches are simply a continuation of the previous group of coaches and have just adjusted the schemes they came up learning to exploit the modern rules which is what’s actually always happened
Yes. I think a large part of what is being mischaracterized as ISO ball is the 2 man offense which was a huge artifact of the illegal defense rule at that time

Yes, the 80s also brought us Paul Westhead on the national stage, winning a championship with the lakers playing fast with Abdul-Jabbar of all players

Nelson made a 3-point shooter out of Jack Sikma. The first stretch five.

Well I mean what do people think Luka and Dallas do? Thats iso ball. Like I keep saying he just doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. He has some bullet points and phrases he’s memorized and repeats but he doesn’t really know what they mean.

I do but you just called pure man illegal defense so like I said you’re not making sense.

Watching young people react to that YouTube video "Larry Bird's Greatest Career highlights," and seeing their jaws drop to their chests in amazement, is a wonderful experience.

No, scholar
Illegal defense forced pure man. That was the entire point of the illegal defense rule.
That is the reason why modern offenses would FEAST on that defensive style.

Sure
I never said there was mono offense today. That's those defending the past making that argument
Luka's ball dominance is why people questioned his ability to win titles until last year (it may still exist).

That’s not what you said and again you don’t understand what you’re talking about. You just don’t have any knowledge of past eras which is fine but you’re constantly bashing them by making ignorant assumptions.

I’ve appreciated him more too as I aged. I was a hawks fan as a kid so I hated bird, but I forgot how quick his release was

“That's those defending the past making that argument”
Why do you make shite like this up? Your first statement is correct, there’s no need to embellish like this.

Dude I asked you what you meant by “pure man” and you said illegal defense. Then later you said the exact opposite. Just cut the shite and have an honest discussion for once.

No
I said
quote:
Illegal defense, defense
Or, to translate for people who can't keep up, the defense used with illegal defense

Yes. At Mark Jackson levels
A big change that creates differences in offense is the way the game is officiated. You have gone from 2 refs who seemed to be able spot travels and palms that are hard for tv viewers to see to having 3 officials that miss egregious travels, and allow “gather steps”
Watching that 87 finals I was surprised at multiple traveling calls in later portions of the game
